We learn not whole meanings at once, but the gist, which we continue to refine each time we hear or read the word in context. Ensure that new vocabulary is introduced in context, visuals support throughout the lesson (and not just in the moment), and expect students to use the targeted vocabulary in multiple contexts. It take practice and revisiting a word to understand it.
