Portugal

Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic is a country whose mainland is located on the Iberian Peninsula, in Southwestern Europe, and whose territory also includes the Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. It features the westernmost point in mainland Europe, and its Iberian portion is bordered to the west and south by the Atlantic Ocean and to the north and east by Spain, the sole country to have a land border with Portugal. Its two archipelagos form two autonomous regions with their own regional governments. The official and national language is Portuguese. Lisbon is the capital and largest city.

It’s a lower secondary and high school located in the centre of the town and attended by 1700 students, aged 12-18, and 170 teachers. There are Scientific Courses (Science and technology, Economics, Arts and Humanistic) and Vocational Courses (Accountancy, Design, Electro technology, IT programming and management, Electromechanical, Multimedia and Mechatronics). Most of our students have direct access to university or enrol the world market due to the technical skills developed in the vocational courses. The school is also attended by SEN students who follow an adapted course of studies. There are also some children of immigrants. The school is located in the centre of the town, which used to be the heart of textile industry. Due to the emerging markets, many workers had to immigrate, affecting the economic situation and family life. There are other economic activities related to services, trading, industry and agriculture. There is a Polytechnic University (www.ipca.pt) in town hosting about 5000 students and it is one of our students´ priorities when it comes to choose a university. The school has a strong European development project due to the participation in a 25-year project of schools meeting Euroweek (see http://euroweek2015.lv/ | www.euroweek.ro), informal exchanges with partner schools from Denmark, Netherlands and Poland, Erasmus+, E-twinning projects; penfriend projects and students´individual mobility . The school takes part in the Shell-ecomarathon and Le Man races with two prototype ecological cars.

There are 20 highly-motivated, experienced teachers coordinating the international projects involving the whole community. This team includes teachers form different areas of studies. They have been working together for more than 15 years in European projects. They have been working on the projects either during the development of the contents in the different subjects or in global projects at school related to healthy living, sustainability, integration, multicultural diversity and ICT use. These projects have involved both students, parents and local partners. Due to this fact, which results from a long-term project, based on the commitment and fruitful projects developed at school, every year there is a waiting list of students for all the levels and courses and there is a very positive atmosphere among the school members, students, staff and parents.
