Kindergarten Identification and Selection Process
Step 1: Kindergarten Nominations
A. The Kindergarten teachers may nominate a Kindergarten student for the GT program. The nominations will be made by completing the Hawthorne Evaluation Rating Scale form.
B. Parents may nominate students by completing the Parent Recommendation Form.
C. Screening will be ongoing with those qualifying being placed by March 1.
Step 2: Testing
A. The GT Coordinator will notify by letter the parents of Kindergarten children nominated by a method other than parental nomination and will send them a parental permission form for testing and a Parent Survey form. The permission form must be returned before any testing can take place.
B. GT Coordinator will obtain at least three criteria used to assess Kindergarten students who perform at remarkably high levels of accomplishment relative to other students of the same age.
C. The following date will be gathered by the GT Coordinator for each student recommended:
Hawthorne Teacher Checklist: learning characteristics, creativity, motivational characteristics.
Kindergarten Skills Checklist: Sound, print, math, language, colors and others deemed necessary.
Observation Survey: Letter identification, word test, concepts about print, writing, vocabulary, hearing sounds in words.

Step 3: Selection
A. The selection committee will be composed of the GT Coordinator, principals, counselor, elementary teacher, junior high teacher and high school teacher as well as both Kindergarten teachers. Each of these educators will have completed thirty (30) hours of GT training in nature and needs of gifted students.
B. The Identification Ranking form for each student will be reviewed.
C. The District will make every attempt to insure that the population of the GT program reflects the population of the total district.
D. Parents of all students screened will be notified of the results of the selection committee.
E. Parent permission will be secured in writing before the student is placed in the GT program.
F. Once a student is placed in the program, he/she will continue in the program, unless the adopted exit procedures are followed.
G. All Kindergarten students selected will be placed and receiving services by March 1st of that school year.
