Step 3:  Selection

A.  The selection committee will be composed of the GT coordinator, both principals, counselor, an elementary teacher,  junior high teacher and a high school teacher.  Each of these educators will have completed thirty (30) hours of gifted talented training in the nature and needs of gifted students as required in 19 TAC 89.2(2).

B.  The Identification Ranking form for each student will be reviewed by the committee.  

C. The District will make every attempt to insure that the population of the GT program reflects the population of the total district.

D.  Parents of all students screened will be notified of the results of the selection committee.

E.  Parental permission will be secured in writing before the student is placed in the Gifted Talented Program.

F.   Once a student is placed in the program, he/she will continue in the program unless the adopted exit procedures are followed.

G.  Furlough Procedures :  Once a student has been identified as gifted talented, they remain in the program until exiting procedures have been completed.  A teacher, parent or student may request a one year furlough from the program for the student.  The GT committee members, GT coordinator, parents and student will meet and determine if this is the best course of action for the student.  This furlough allows the above named identified student to remain in the gifted talented program, but they will not participate during that particular school year.  

H.  Appeal Process - Parents of students not selected may register an appeal to the selection committee under the following conditions:  

1.  Student's selection score must be at or above the district range on the Identification Matrix.

I.  Exit Procedures - At any time during the school year, a student's placement in the GT program may be reviewed if a gifted talented instructor requests a review meeting.  If exiting is under consideration, a meeting of all persons associated with the student ( principal, counselor, teachers, g/t coordinator, parents and student) will be held to determine whether or not the student's needs are being best served by continuation in the program.  Exiting may be accomplished by unanimous vote of members.  A student who has been exited from the program may not apply for re-entry into the program unless they are re-identified and determined qualified for placement.  This student will not be eligible for re-nomination until one year has elapsed.  A parent may request that they child be withdrawn from the program at any time.  It is recommended, however, that the review process described above be followed.
