January

We have a lot to share with you since we returned to school at the beginning of January. Please enjoy reading about the learning we have been doing this month.

Literacy

We really enjoyed reading the Carnival of the Animals which is a book of fourteen poems each about a different animal. We listened to the music and tried to decide which piece of music suited each animal poem and why.

We wrote a class poem about elephants and then made a class book with our own animal poems. Our book has poems about cats, big cats, rats, fish and even a penguin!

Numeracy and Mathematics

We used concrete materials to represent percentages and then wrote them as fractions and decimals.

We have been learning about percentages, decimals and fractions. We know how they link, write percentages as fractions in the lowest form. We can also found percentages of amounts by using known facts such as 25% is equivalent to 1/4.

We used all of our knowledge about percentages to draw a shop of our choice with a sale. We then gave our items prices and decided what the special offers were. We wrote questions for our friends to answer about our sale. We made sure we could answer the question before we asked them!

Exploring different objects relating to China

We made animals using the Tangrams which is a Chinese puzzle made up of seven shapes. We also learnt about the myth of Niam which is where some of the New Year traditions are said to come from. We retold the story using a storyboard or story map.

Health and Wellbeing

Have you a growth or fixed mindset? That is the question we were posed and tried to find out which one we had. Throughout our learning we are aiming for a growth mindset, with phrases such as 'mistakes help us learn' and 'there's no such thing as can't! '

Art Gallery

Mrs Cairns teaches the children on a Tuesday morning. Please read about some of the learning the class have been doing with her.

This month, P.6B have been learning all about circles.

We’ve been using mathematical vocabulary such as circumference, diameter and radius to describe them. We’ve been learning how to calculate these and solve problems involving them. We’ll also be taking part in mathematical challenges, where children will draw circles, with given properties, to create their own versions of the art of Wassily Kandinsky.

In P.E., we have been developing our balance and control in gymnastics. We are practising different inversions, such as cartwheels and handstands, and creating partner balances. We will then use these to create routines, paying particular focus to our ability to work as part of a team and provide others with positive feedback to help improve their performances.
