At the heart of everything we do with our school sports are the pupils. Their voice is listened to when deciding which clubs they would like to see offered at the start of the academic year and the staff are always keen to help deliver as many of the pupils’ options as possible. We have 10 different members of staff leading an extra-curricular club this year which demonstrates our commitment to sport and physical activity. Our Active Schools Co-ordinator – Chris Rose - works closely and supports the school in a number of ways, including: recruiting volunteers to run clubs, organising competitions and festivals, and providing CLPL opportunities for staff.
We have also created a Sports Committee to give pupils a louder voice when deciding on sport and PE in school.
Our school values of honesty, fairness and kindness are discussed in PE lessons. It is important that the pupils understand that these values should not be left in the classroom and that the gym hall is an extension of the classroom and the outside world.
What is the best thing about sport in your school?
For over a year Mr McDowell has been running daily ‘Sensory Circuits’ for pupils that find it tricky to settle into the classroom environment. At the start of the school day, identified pupils, come to the gym hall and place their animal on the Reflect Board to let Mr McDowell know how they are feeling. The animal can then stay where it is or move depending on how they feel after completion of the Sensory Circuits. This allows Mr McDowell to identify patterns about how pupils are feeling when they come to school, and check in with them daily to discuss their feelings.
