Active maths - exploring decimal numbers
Investigating angles/bearings
Investigating circumference, diameter and radius using our outdoor measuring tapes
Building our scale models for Mearns Masters Designers
Summarising, both orally and in a written form has been a huge focus for us over the past few weeks. Summarising is a key skill when reading and writing and allows us to show our understanding of a text.
We also had a very informative visitor this week - Mr Brand from the Strategic planning office of East Renfrewshire Council. He was asking us to consider the placement of a sustainable structure and the use of land in our community.
Please see below for all of our learning this week in 7.27. We have all really enjoyed learning outdoors and explored the ways in which we can learn from nature. Every week we have a new focus and often connect our numeracy learning to outdoor learning. Being outdoors isn't only an amazing opportunity for us to learn from one another and learn from nature, but it is fantastic for our mental health. Being in the fresh air is a great end to a Thursday afternoon. As the weather gets worse it is important we all bring in the appropriate clothing for outdoor learning as we will be going outside rain or shine!
Vertical and horizontal negative number lines, can you see how negative 1 still has a value? Sometimes we think that -1 means that it has no value, but it does!
Coming back together, getting into our register order as fast as we can!
Arrays! Nature can show us patterns in number.
Arrays can represent the commutative law, an array showing 7x2 can also show 2x7. Learning partners selected a times table they find challenging and used this opportunity to consolidate their skills.
Learners worked together to assess each others writing in depth. This was an opportunity to really think in a deep sense about the success criteria and learn from one another.
As part of Mearns Masters Gastronomy we have been doing lots of work on budgeting and planning with money.
By examining 'what went wrong' in maths we were able to create a universal success criteria for multiplication and division sums. This was very interesting as we were able to break it right down, step by step. We then created 'mistakes' for our learning partner to find.

This week we have been focussing on learning about the contexts in which we would find negative numbers. We learned about rising sea levels, increases in global temperatures and the implications of this for our planet and the people that live on it. We conducted a temperature experiment which allowed us to observe what happens when polar ice melts. We measured the sea level and also the temperature.
During our plenary we decided that we would like to follow on from this experiment and measure temperature in a more accurate way with another device rather than a mercury thermometer.
Below are the pictures from the Mearns Master gastronomy showcase. The 'Heavens Kitchen' group showcased their learning by inviting the other half of the class to their restaurant for a full sit down meal. They had to consider staffing, timings, roles and so much more! The work that went into this experience, creating the meals, budgeting for their restaurant, including sourcing ingredients, was immense! I am so proud of the work that they have done. Working together they have collaborated and developed their meta-skills.

The past two weeks have been so busy! Lockerbie was an exciting and adventurous experience which we haven't stopped talking about since our return.
We have also showcased our learning by half of 7.27 opening their own 'Showtime' restaurant in the library.
Ensuring good hygiene levels
Collaboration and teamwork
Peeling
Vegetables for a healthy, vegetable tomato soup
Eggs for cupcakes
Measuring using measuring spoons
Using the hob
Interpreting problems on a calculator! Really challenging multi-step word problems. Learners then created their own to challenge their partner.

Our first few weeks in P7 have been a whirlwind! While waiting on permissions we have been very busy settling into our new classroom and routine.
Below are many pictures which give you an insight into our learning. We will post a link to our Google Site on our blog and would invite you to visit our site each week as it will be updated weekly.
Each individual tab under the 'Learning Log' section corresponds to an individual learner.
Crispy Cauliflower. We cooked this the first 2 weeks in the kitchen and focussed on the P7 practical cooking skills and learned about seasonal produce.
Crispy Cauliflower. We also focussed on fine dining plating and the skills associated with fine dining cooking.
Creating our own fine dining recipes with a focus on seasonal food
Listening and Talking / Note Taking - Learning about fine dining
Planning our menus
Mediation scenarios - drama and health and wellbeing. We considered how to be a positive friend/peer and how to mediate when things go wrong
We visited the MacTaggart and Mickel building site across from the school. This was organised in conjunction with our Designers Mearns Masters pathway. We learned about skills for life, learning and work, job roles and sustainable building development.
We even got to sign the inside walls of a house before the insulation is added, this 'time capsule' will be there for years to come!
A sustainable urban drainage solution
We learned about the different types of electrical wires. Different colours are used for different services.
News articles created at the end of our Mearns Masters Campaigners unit of work. Advertising the benefits of their sustainable structures.
