Students Build Edmonton is a Minecraft Education build challenge created in partnership with the City of Edmonton. Registration opens on April 14th, 2025. Stay tuned for more information!
Minecraft Education is an Ed Tech tool as a Google Play Store application that can be accessed on Chromebooks and is available on a request-by-course basis (as opposed to whole-school implementation). There is no cost to the school. Through Minecraft Education, teachers can:
Provide opportunities for collaboration, creativity, problem-solving and more
Access pre-made lesson plans created by Minecraft and a community of engaged teachers from a variety of subject areas around the world
Design and differentiate lessons with direct curricular connections where students can document their work and showcase their learning
Explore the in-game coding companion and tutorials for teaching students coding fundamentals
“Minecraft Education is an open-world game that promotes creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in an immersive environment where the only limit is your imagination.”
Currently all teachers and students in the division already have access to Minecraft Education licences, free of charge. As part of the Division's process for the use of Third Party Apps*:
Teachers must have a conversation with their Principal about their plans to use any Third-Party App,
Schools are asked to notify parents about the use of any Third-Party App. Click here for a letter that can be used by schools to notify parents. Make a copy if you'd like to adapt this letter.
*A Third-Party App is any non-Google Workspace (Docs, Drive, Gmail, Classroom, etc.) application for which students are asked to create accounts.
The Minecraft Education School Request Form only needs to be filled out once per year. Since all teachers and students are provided Minecraft Education licences by default, there is no need to submit new requests for every new user at the school. New students after the original Minecraft Education request will automatically receive accounts up to 24 hours after enrolling in your school.
Before requesting Minecraft Education for your school, please consider reading this teacher resource to ensure Minecraft Education is a suitable fit for your learning goals and your school community. Schools should have a designated Minecraft Education Teacher Lead in order to ensure one request per school. The Minecraft Education Teacher Lead is responsible for filling out the School Request Form below.
The Division has observed a significant increase in the utilization of Minecraft Education for students and teachers since its initial pilot program in 2021. A series of YouTube tutorials has been developed to support continued growth and facilitate effective implementation. These tutorials are specifically aligned with our context.
The TIPS team is currently accepting requests for new videos. A member of the TIPS team will review and carefully consider your request.
Our goal is to create resources curated to the needs of our Edmonton Public Schools’ use of Minecraft Education. In some cases, we may find that excellent tutorials on your suggested topic already exist. If so, we'll be sure to share those resources with you. Before submitting your request, explore the resources available to you on Minecraft Education’s YouTube page.
We encourage you to continue sharing your ideas and feedback as we strive to build a comprehensive library of Minecraft Education support materials.
