Beginner Band 10 is an introductory course for students who would like to learn how to play a woodwind, brass instrument, or percussion in an ensemble setting. Instrumental Music (Band) 10-20-30
Teacher - Melissa Hamans
Instrumental Music (Concert Band) provides students with a background of junior high or private band training to further develop their musical abilities in performing, listening, and composing. This is done through the development of the student's knowledge of music theory and well as playing a number of musical selections. Students must be proficient in instruments such as flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French Horn, baritone, tuba, or percussion. This is NOT a beginner course.
Students in Instrumental Music 10/20/30 have the opportunity to showcase their skills in both a winter concert, nearing the end of first semester, and spring concert at the end of the second semester.
We have also participated in festivals, both local and out-of-town, and we hope to resume those activities when it is safe to do so. Previous festivals and programs that we have participated in include Disney Performing Arts (Anaheim, CA, USA), Whistler Music Festival (Whistler, BC), Banff Music Retreats (Banff, AB). We also have the Jasper Place Music Parents' Society to help subsidize the costs of these trips.
Pre-requisites:
In order to take Instrumental Music 10, students need to have previously taken band in junior high or have had private instruction on a concert band instrument.
Instrumental Jazz 15-25-35 (Jazz Band)
In addition to the rehearsal and performance of jazz music, students will focus on listening to jazz, improvisation skills, history, and technique. This ensemble will consist of traditional jazz ensemble instrumentation (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drums, piano, guitar, and bass), as well as an opportunity for non-traditional instrumentation, including flute, clarinet, and valve trombone.
This ensemble is open to students who are concurrently enrolled in Instrumental 10-20-30/Guitar 15-25-35, and possibly by audition as the music director sees necessary.
This class runs outside of the regular schedule and rehearses once a week.
