The first step on the empathetic journey is with yourself. How can you connect with others if you
don’t know who you are? In this step, you will explore activities that allow you to think and reflect inward.
Empathy is the act of understanding and experiencing the thoughts and feelings of another person.
This definition is not confined to traumatic experiences. You can experience and understand the thoughts/feelings of another person in many situations. With empathy, you take the focus off of yourself and put it on someone else. You can never fully understand what it’s like to be someone else. But by making an attempt to take the focus off of yourself and put it on someone else, you allow yourself to link or connect with them. You build compassion and understanding.
REFLECT: What does it mean to build a community of one? Why is this important in the drama classroom?
To build a community of one is to create a classroom environment where all students work toward the goal of making themselves, others, and the class successful by creating a community that is positive and supporting.
YOU are the Character!
Using the document below, answer as many of the questions as you feel comfortable answering.
Using these answers, write a "Character Bio" for YOURSELF. Do not just list your answers to the questions. Write a personal narrative. Essentially, what's your backstory? What does an actor need to know about you in order to accurately portray you? I would suggest writing it in the third person (example: "Mrs. A was a lonely child" instead of "I was a lonely child".
Write your Character Bio on a Google Doc and attach to the Google Classroom assignment linked below. There is no requirement for length or format. Just write an honest bio. The more work you put into to this, the better able you will be to connect with characters and stories throughout this class, and with people in your life.
YOU MUST KNOW YOURSELF BEFORE YOU CAN EMPATHIZE WITH OTHERS.
