Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Design: Drive mechanism redesigned to decrease friction. RC debating between 1 or 2 magnets (since current torque values are uncertain)
Fabrication: 316 grade steel 3mm diameter threaded lead screw. Hex nuts used as linear nut. 1” diam. x 1” height cylindrical magnet for RC. Smaller micro-motor used.
Tests: Co-axial torque measurements reveal that this orientation produces less torque for two given magnets compared to parallel orientation
Accomplishments from Previous Week
New drive mechanism (prototype #5) redesigned. Threaded lead screw with metal hex nuts purchased. Grade 316 steel 3D printed plates arrived. LCD Screen working. Hall sensor circuit connected. Read NuVasive patents and spoke with NuVasive engineer. Read more literature on rotating magnets and magnetic feedback.
Goals for Next Week
Macy: Finalize RC design. Complete for KLS Martin meeting this Thursday.
Dingyi: Assemble metal to-scale prototype using purchased parts.
Ashley: Finalize RC design. Complete for KLS Martin meeting this Thursday.
Alec: Assemble metal to-scale prototype using purchased parts.
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Suggestion: Read Literature for magnets
Action: Spoke with NuVasive engineers and read NuVasive patents
Suggestion: Consider how to properly compute torque from our experiments
Action: co-axial measurements taken

Comment: Dr. Gosman is having a meeting with KLS Martin (distraction device company) lead representatives on May 31. She has asked the team to assemble a fully functional prototype for her to present (or send a video). The goal is to use this as a proof of concept that magnetic actuation is feasible with their device and to initiate a collaboration

Risks and Areas of Concern
Would mumetal vs steel reduce the magnetic exposure? How to integrate it?
Resources or Information Required but not Available
How to compute or measure the torque properly for our RC?
