Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Design: Drive mechanism (Prototype #2) is currently being optimized and 3D printed. Remote control will use internal and external permanent magnet system.
Fabrication: Drive mechanism parts (with plate) of the bevel gear are being 3D printed at a larger scale. Prototype #2 will be machined this week out of titanium. Remote Control materials are in and will be 3D printed this week.
Tests: Risk reduction will be assessing if permanent magnetic system can rotate the magnet on the current prototype.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
CAD design and animation for a new drive mechanism, the bevel gear, was created. This is more easily activated and low profile. Parts for the remote control, including a motor, hall sensor, lcd screen, and magnets, were ordered.
First draft of report was written and design presentation of initial prototype was completed.
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Macy: 3D print remote control (RC) case and build simple external RC using a DC motor and magnets as proof of concept.
Dingyi: Research how to integrate hall sensor and LCD screen into remote control. Push 3D metal printing companies.
Ashley: Help build simple external RC using a DC motor and magnets as proof of concept.
Alec: Begin machining of prototype #2. Design alternative drive mechanism #3, from comments from other students.
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Suggestions: Verify resolution of 3D printed titanium
Action: Currently contacting potential industries partners that can be used to 3D print metal to determine resolution
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Suggestion: Turn bevel gear drive mechanism on its side, so the magnet does not add pressure against the skin
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Suggestions: Consider alternative drive mechanism in which pressure against the cranial area (perhaps by a simple touch) can actuate the mechanism.
Action: Currently redesigning a third alternative design. Will discuss this idea with the sponsor at this weeks meeting.
Risks and Areas of Concern
How to determine which direction the drive mechanism is going after implantation
How to lock and unlock the device to change direction after implantation
