Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Design: External magnet on the RC increased size to get more torque. CAD design for drive mechanism updated. Use steel instead of mumetal. RC case comes with a 3D printed handle.
Fabrication: 316 grade steel 3mm diameter threaded lead screw. Hex nuts used as linear nut. 1” diam. x 1” height cylindrical magnet for RC. Smaller micro-motor used.
Tests: Torque measurements on their way. Use polyurethane 3mm material to simulate skin (barrier).
Accomplishments from Previous Week
New drive mechanism (prototype #5) redesigned. Threaded lead screw with metal hex nuts purchased. Grade 316 steel 3D printed plates purchased - will arrive May 30. Stronger magnet for RC purchased. Began integrating LCD for battery life and hall sensor output. Redesigned RC case for 3D print.
Goals for Next Week
Macy: Finalize RC design. Add Hall sensor circuitry.
Dingyi: Finish torque experiments.
Ashley: 3D print remote designs. Add LCD and battery life circuitry.
Alec: Assemble metal to-scale prototype using purchased parts.
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Suggestion: Suggested company to purchase lead screw
Action: Force output of lead screw is only 10lbs. This project requires 30lbs force output. Purchased 2mm diam. threaded rod with metal hex nut instead.
Suggestion: Use polyurethane to simulate skin
Action: Purchased material from McMaster Carr. Will run new experiments this week.

Comment: Dr. Gosman is having a meeting with KLS Martin (distraction device company) lead representatives on May 31. She has asked the team to assemble a fully functional prototype for her to present (or send a video). The goal is to use this as a proof of concept that magnetic actuation is feasible with their device and to initiate a collaboration

Risks and Areas of Concern
Would mumetal vs steel reduce the magnetic exposure? How to integrate it?
Unsure why, but experimental torque results do not match the theoretical. Calculations from literature are unclear.
Resources or Information Required but not Available
How to make/purchase to-scale metal bevel gears? Or is there an alternative?
Schedule
Upcoming milestone: Send video of functional device for KLS Martin presentation
Updated Gantt chart (link).
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
Spent: ~$600.00
Remaining: $4000.00
Progress on Report and Webpage
Report title page updated. Website updated. Would like to add a short literature review section in combination with steel (or mumetal) torque experiments to better acknowledge the issue of magnetic exposure.
