Podcast

This year we saw the Winter Olympics happen in Beijing. What better way to incorporate the real world into our learning? The objective of this project was to first learn about the different winter sports by doing research. We used our IPADs to look up information about the sports and looked in books. We also watched videos for each sport to really understand how it is organized. After researching the students needed to use their new knowledge/understanding of what they were reading to answer the questions for the Podcast. They also needed to understand what a Podcast is and how it is set up. To fully understand this we listened to a few Podcasts first (Brains On! and But Why?) and then outlined what criteria we needed to create our own.

Here are some criteria's we came up with:

  • Needs introduction music before the conversation happens.

  • Should be short in length.

  • Talking needs to be clear and at a good pace for everyone to understand.

  • Podcasts are audio only which makes it important to not have background noise that will disrupt the content.

After outlining the criteria and researching our topic we started practicing our communication skills. It was very important that we spoke clearly and loudly. Once we recorded our Podcast, we needed to re-listen to make sure everything was to our liking before saving the final copy. Each group also picked their introduction and ending music for their Podcast. Once that was done our Winter Olympic Podcast was complete!

Step 1

Introduce the topic of Podcasts and listen to some Podcasts. Once we listened to some we came up with how to organize a Podcast.

Step 2

Get in groups of three and research the sport they were given. The sports that were used in this Podcast were: Ice skating, curling, hockey, speed skating, bobsledding, snowboarding and skiing.

Step 3

Find the answers to the questions that would be asked.

- When was the sport first played in the Olympics?

-How is it played and what is the equipment?

-How is it scored?

-Would you try the sport and why?

Hockey

Skiing

Snowboarding

Curling

Ice Skating

Bobsledding

Speed Skating

Step 4

The teacher helped them organize the Podcast and practiced saying it so that when we recorded we were ready.

Step 5

Mr. Kish came to our class and helped us record and edit our Podcast! (Thank you Mr. Kish)

Step 6

Create a Google Classroom with our picture and have our recording next to our picture. Have everyone enjoy our Podcast!
