At Our Lady of Pompei, we have the privilege of having a robotics workshop led by Mrs. Loretta. Mrs. Loretta has been running the robotics program for the last 8 years. Once a week on Thursdays, students who have signed up, stay after school to work on their robotic project to prepare for the ROBOCUP event. Two high school students (graduates of OLP) Massimo and Maria join us in the science room, and Ms. Sherron volunteers to help the students with their projects. Throughout the year, the students learn how to build EV3 robots and code them to follow various challenges. Two groups work on an artistic short dramatic exercise and two groups compete in the RoboParty event. In the Roboparty, each group programs their robots to follow a black line, go through a maze, and compete in a sumo competition whereby they have to push the other robot off the mat, the final is a 1-minute dance or creative exercise.Â
The focus of the Robotics program is to enable students to develop an engineering mindset. If it doesn't work, why? What are the things we need to check?Â
Loretta is very proud of all the students and their hard work. She states "The kids did an amazing job and worked hard on building and programming their robots. One of our Onstage groups, Dumbo, won second place! the other team didn't get into the top three, however, they worked very hard and persevered. Two of our robot party groups placed well in their competition. We had 1st place and 4th place in Sumo. 3rd place in the short creative Dance: Yellow Submarine. In summary, they placed in the top 5 for the maze and follow the line challenges." - Ms. Loretta
