Building community together, through empathy and empowerment.
Welcome! This platform is an outline of our promises and vision for W&M. We worked diligently to reflect unique voices and experiences from across campus. We aimed to include achievable short-term initiatives in addition to broad overarching goals that will shape our policies and priorities. We designed our platform to stray away from vague and redundant campaign promises, instead utilizing action-oriented initiatives grounded in research and current campus policies.
Our platform is not complete. Your voice, thoughts, and experiences are the most important part. We consider this a living platform and will be shaped and updated directly by our community.
We want to thank and give credit to our friends and amazing team members who helped develop our platform: Amelia Grossman, Katie Grotewiel, Mary Kardos, Max Berckmueller, Mia Tilman, Owen Williams, Sydney Thayer, and Taylor Fox.
Improving the Academic Experience
Our administration will be committed to ensuring that all students have an engaging and supportive learning experience. We believe that there should be greater racial equity and representation in the curriculum and faculty, and better facilitated communication between students and faculty.
Advocating for Enhanced Campus Safety, Sexual Assault Prevention and Support, & Title IX
Campus safety continues to serve as a critical issue for all students at William & Mary. You deserve to be and feel safe. The role of SA should be to listen and work with campus stakeholders to resolve areas of inadequacy. It is also crucial that our community engage in continuing education for sexual assault prevention and increase survivor support. We believe and support all survivors.
Improving Mental Health and Wellness & Student Health Services
We understand the importance of mental and physical wellness and the need for easy-to-access resources to better these aspects of our lives. To help continue the work on achieving adequate access to these resources on campus we intend to work in tandem with the William & Mary Wellness Center to improve existing programs and introduce new resources.
Creating an Accessible W&M for all Students
All students have the right to have an equitable experience at William & Mary conducive to success and flourishment. Our administration will empower and advocate for continued support of accessibility services.
Creating an Environmentally Conscious & Sustainable Campus
Our administration will be committed to promoting sustainability across campus by working with students and leaders in our community to help advance the university's sustainability goals. We believe that creating a more sustainable community is an essential part of moving our campus forward.
Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
One of William & Mary's core values is belonging: "We create a welcoming and caring community that embraces diverse people and perspectives." While steps have been made to support diversity, equity, and inclusion, we believe there should be greater efforts to make long strides in order to effect lasting change. We must create support and uplift students of marginalized communities. We must create a culture of acceptance, cultural competence, and advocacy. Our administration will listen with open ears and open hearts to ensure the protection and empowerment of all communities.
Increasing Outreach and Transparency
The main purpose of Student Assembly is to lift all student voices and lead as the voice of reason, logic, and help--especially in times of uncertainty. As a representative body, SA must be intentional about implementing initiatives and ensuring outreach and feedback with students who are impacted by them. Our administration will value transparency and collaboration in everything we do.
Advocating for an Improved Student Experience
College is a time of significant adjustment that requires students to adapt to their new academic environment, in addition to navigating life. Our administration will advocate for resources that will teach basic life skills and help prepare students for life post graduation. We believe that your student experience should be shaped by you, our goal is to support and empower students so that they are enabled with the skills necessary to succeed.
Increasing Outreach, Engagement, & Advocacy for Graduate Students
Building more meaningful, impactful, lasting relationships with our graduate schools and students will create ideas, advocacy, and bonds that will last beyond the walls and time spent at William & Mary. Our administration hopes to bridge the disconnect between the undergraduate and graduate student bodies. We want graduate students to know your experiences here are valued as much as the undergraduate experience, and that Student Assembly is here to advocate and support you.
