TERRA & OSCAR'S PROPOSED INITIATIVES FOR OUTREACH & ENGAGEMENT
Outreach is one of the most hidden aspects of Student Assembly. In the past, the Department has mainly focused on the graphics, promotional materials, and social media of Student Assembly. We are hoping to expand and reshape this what outreach looks like to achieve more effective and transparent connections between Student Assembly and the Student Body. We want students to know what Student Assembly is, what we do, and how we can help! This goes beyond social media posts and graphics. We want the Department of Outreach to meet face-to-face with students to truly assist in introducing Student Assembly to every part of campus.
Continuing Office Hours. We will commit to hosting Office Hours. In addition to Office Hours with the President and Vice President, we will ensure that every Student Assembly Department hosts their own Office Hours regularly for students to voice their opinions concerning certain areas of interest. These will be communicated through Student Happenings and our emails to the Student Body.
Did you know students can provide public comments at Senate meetings? We will encourage students and organizations to use this underutilized feature of our Senate. Whether to raise concerns, share progress on a project external to Student Assembly, or more, we want to make sure that those elected to represent you are fulfilling their roles. All information about time, location, and current business will be shared with the student body in order to fulfill this goal.
Improving External Relations. We understand that Instagram might not always be the most engaging platform to be on. To help with engagement and ensuring students are in the know, we propose developing an External Relations Committee to dedicate to running Student Assembly social media accounts, with the Department of Outreach focusing primarily on communicating with the student body and the creation of graphic design and videography to help connect Student Assembly to the W&M community.
Improving external relations beyond emails. Have you gotten sick of those emails yet? They hold incredibly important information and updates, but we know that every student's inbox is congested with listserv emails. We know that emails are not always the most engaging way to go about sharing information regarding Student Assembly. We promise to work towards more accessible media such as videos, interactive graphics, and podcasts to help in facilitating more campus engagement and keeping everyone in the loop (in a fun way!)
Getting the word to students ASAP! We plan to develop strong ties to first-year/transfer students and ensure that they are welcome to voice their opinions to Student Assembly. We plan to work with RAs, Transfer Offices, and Orientation Aides to let students know what they can accomplish through Student Assembly. Furthermore, we propose the inclusion of accessible introductory materials (see the proposal above) that explain Student Assembly to new students and truly get them "in-the-know" with how to advocate for change and their needs.
Bridging Gaps between Students & Alumni. Networking? Connections? Advice? Alumni have it. We propose the creation of an Undersecretary of Alumni Engagement to create student connections with William & Mary alumni. This Undersecretary will work closely with the Alumni Association to create programming and educational campaigns that connect students with alumni near and far.
Additionally, we hope to work towards establishing a database of Student Assembly alumni to assist with passing down institutional knowledge to better inform initiatives and get student leaders in and out of Student Assembly connected to the right people.
