TERRA & OSCAR'S COMMITMENT TO GRADUATE STUDENTS
William & Mary is not only an undergraduate campus. We benefit from an amazing Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, School of Education, School of Business, Law School, and Marine Science Institute. These communities should be allowed to cross-communicate and learn from one another. We acknowledge that the best advocates for graduate students ARE graduate students. We are taking several measures to ensure that we are including Graduate Students in our conversations within Student Assembly.
Representation & Inclusion. We will seek heightened representation of graduate students on important university committees and to key university stakeholders including the Board of Visitors, the President’s and Provost’s Offices, Arts & Sciences administration, as well as other university policy and advisory committees. We will advocate for including Graduate Council leadership in university policy discussions such as the President’s Aides, as well as meetings with the President, Rector, and Provost.
Collaboration & Communication. We will work to strengthen relationships and collaboration between graduate schools and main campus, especially in terms of attendance at large-scale campus events including Convocation, Charter Day, and Yule Log. We will advocate for centering the graduate student experience across all Student Assembly decision-making, including funding priorities and philosophies. We plan to formalize regular communication and collaboration between Student Assembly and the Graduate Council, as well as with the leadership of the various graduate school governance organizations.
Advocacy & Visibility. We will seek to elevate graduate student awareness of Student Assembly and the Graduate Council and how these organizations can advocate for solutions to issues that affect them. We will advocate for graduate students who hold Assistantships and Fellowships so they can make a livable wage and navigate issues related to the cost of living.
Financial Transparency. We will advocate for heightened transparency relating to the use of graduate student activity fees to ensure that decisions regarding the use of those funds are made by graduate students and not their respective school administrations.
Changing the Culture. We will work towards making internal culture changes within Student Assembly so graduate students, particularly those serving in the Senate, feel more welcome and valued and can make effective contributions to the body on behalf of their schools.
