TERRA & OSCAR'S PROPOSED INITIATIVES FOR DATA & FINANCE
We promise to make data on student input central for guiding Student Assembly initiatives. Part of being successful representatives for the student body comes from repeated communication and feedback, and making sure that we have relevant and reliable data is central to that. The Department of Data & Analytics is still new, but it has the potential to be crucial to the process of Student Assembly decision making. It is our hope to include more data-driven students in Student Assembly through the expansion of this Department, a group that is steadily growing on campus!
Your elected student representatives in Student Assembly are the deciding body for how to use your Student Activities fee. That’s around $700,000 that Student Assembly is tasked with delegating. We're focused on making sure you know how Student Assembly works with your money and how to make sure your organizations are getting the funding they need. Not only does the Student Activities fee fund RSOs, but it also funds all Student Assembly initiatives. You should know what your money is funding and have a say in what projects are pursued.
Encouraging Feedback. Have an opinion? Don't know who to voice it to? Want to remain anonymous? We got you. We plan to publish unbiased surveys for collecting general feedback on student priorities. These surveys will and can be used to determine what initiatives and projects are the most appealing to a wide range of students to ensure that we are utilizing funding correctly. These surveys will be sent out through emails to the student body and will be posted around highly frequented campus locations.
Survey Transparency. If a survey conducted by Student Assembly demonstrates a common theme, we will be candid with our findings. We will share common concerns as well as identify tangible solutions with the appropriate organizations and offices through our emails to the student body.
Including/Encouraging Student Research. At William & Mary, students are conducting groundbreaking research that have real-world implications. We propose inviting students involved in research to illustrate ways that William & Mary (and Student Assembly) can improve their services and initiatives.
After Action Reports. Working with Student Assembly’s Department of Finance, We promise to increase the monitoring of After Action Reports to ensure that funding is going to well-attended events and that clubs that have not received funding in the past are treated equitably.
Financial Equity. We are determined to combat narratives around ‘underfunded’ organizations by publishing publicly available data about student organization funding (including Media Council and Alma Mater Productions).
Educated decision-making. We plan to increase the use of data to drive funding decisions through thoughtful and unbiased surveys and focus groups.
OBAC, OBAC… and more OBAC. Did you miss a quarter funding deadline? You're not alone. Through our emails to the student body, we promise to continue communication of all quarter funding deadlines and information sessions to ensure that all RSOs seeking funding are considered during the distribution of funds. We plan to improve the information provided to students about avenues to secure funding (ex. when to utilize the OBAC system, what constitutes a request for event funding through senate bills, etc.) through easily understandable flowcharts and "Step by Step" graphics.
Mapping. We plan to implement an Undersecretary of Geographic Information System Mapping position for use in Student Assembly-wide initiatives. Emphasizing mapping is useful for creating visual aids that indicate the locations of compost bins, gender-neutral bathrooms, accessible building entrances, campus walkways, bottle refill stations, construction sites, and more. Currently, an interactive map exists for composting. We are committed to expanding this initiative to fulfill other needs.
