Andreas Feininger started his artistic career as a freelance photographer before taking up work with Life Magazine. Although he is best known for his photographs of New York, especially Manhattan, he also photographed portraits and natural objects. This photograph depicts the vast expanse of the lower Manhattan skyline. The scale of the city and the reach of its buildings is enhanced by the composition, where the streets and minute details of city life are set against the vast cityscape and tall buildings. This scale is amplified by the large size of the photograph. Despite this size and scale, Lower Manhattan as portrayed here conveys the macrocosm of an urban community.
