William D. Barnes was a professor of painting at the College of William and Mary from 1975 - 2016. A member of Zeuxis, a still life painters’ association based in New York, he is well-known for his still-life paintings and monotypes. Here, Barnes has portrayed the process he used to create this work. To make a monotype, an artist draws with ink or paint on a metal plate which is then laid over with a damp piece of paper and run through a printing press. The fluidity of this medium is evident in the loose brushstrokes and soft lines of the print.
