Week 2
April 7 - April 11
April 7 - April 11
Today, I went to Medfield High School to check in again with my inside mentor about my schedule. I also sat down with her to map out what my Wednesday schedule would look like since that is the day of the wellness fair. We also talked about the plan for showing Nancy the Medfield High School gym where the blood drive will be held. Nancy must look at the space to document and proceed with the documentation process. After I left Medfield High School at extended passing time, I walked to the Medfield Public Library. I quickly grabbed some lunch for later and headed to the Medfield Public Library to eat and work.
I was given the task to do 100 take-and-make bags. These bags are for the kids who come to the children's center in the library to do arts and crafts at home! Today, the take-and-make bags were for the summer reading program that the library has going on. The theme this time for the take-and-make bags was space. These bags are in a program where kids are given different books to read about space while having hands-on creative projects. This allows for the kids to learn about space through books, make arts and craft projects in space, and potentially win the big prize in the end! Each bag had to have one white rectangular card, one string, one plastic mini cup, three plastic mini cups, a strip with 4 planets, and a mini paper astronaut. This whole project took me from 10:49 to 2:15 since there were 100 take-and-make bags to make. This also took very long because I packed all of the take-and-make bags by myself! Overall, I had an amazing time making these little arts and crafts projects!
Today, I came in for the first period to work with Mrs. Rimbey. I came in to fix some grammatical errors on my website. I am also here to learn more about Canva.
Today, Nancy came to the building to inspect the gym! This is very important since the documentation process is very specific. Nancy took pictures of the space and counted how many electrical sockets there were in the gym. We also had to figure out where the truck's loading dock would be since the phlebotomist has very specific rules. She also told me that the setup of the drive could change depending on who the supervisor is on the day of my drive. The loading dock is an essential part of the actual blood drive since that's where the unloading and loading of the supplies will be. The original spot for the loading dock was supposed to be the outside entrance to the cafeteria, but since the guidelines only say that there should be no more than 7 steps in a staircase, and there were 8, we couldn't use that entrance.
Today's inspection turned out great! Nancy and I have solidified where the loading dock would be. Instead, we are using the door near the wellness rooms in the high school that leads to the pick-up of the buses. We also discussed which doors should be opened and which doors should remain locked for the safety of the school. I will need to reach out and meet with Bill Deking to make sure that the rules for locking the doors are followed. Overall, this inspection turned out great, and I was very happy to see Nancy!
Today, I went to high school to develop my Canva skills. Today is also the day of the Wellness Fair, and I had to make sure I had all the right materials. The day before, I had started to make a flyer on my own, but wanted feedback on it. This was very important since it would be beneficial for my table at the fair to have a flyer with a QR code for students to scan.
This is the finalized flyer that was used for the Wellness Fair on Wednesday. I had sent this to Nancy and gotten her approval on the flyer! This is very important since there are rules when it comes to promotion!
This was the setup of the table at the fair! On my first day of senior project, I went to the labs and saw the facility. While there, Janice gave me a lot of materials for the table at the fair. I had a lot of papers that explained the mission of the American Red Cross, scholarships, training courses, high school donor requirements, blood disease information, and information about the blood program leader program, and a lot of stickers!
The wellness fair went better than expected! A lot of students came by and asked questions about the American Red Cross and what my goal was. I was very nervous since I am not the best public speaker, but surprisingly, I did well. I was able to answer all questions and have caught the eyes of potential volunteers for my drive. Everyone loved the stickers and mints that were displayed on the table, and some people even scanned the QR code! All the students were very friendly and I am so grateful that I was able to do the table. This proved to me that I can handle these types of positions and am very proud of myself for staying calm and professional.
After the fair, I went and got myself some lunch at Brothers Marketplace uptown. I then walked from there to the fire station and met up with my outside mentor, Bill Deking! We talked about marketing strategies and ways to promote the blood drive. I also informed him of Nancy's inspection and my ideas to lock some doors in the school. had informed me that the doors with exit signs can't be locked due to safety. This was very good feedback since I want to make sure my blood drive runs smoothly and safely while following protocol. I had shown Bill the flyer that I made, and he posted it on the Medfield Fire Department Facebook.
Bill had also printed my flyers to hang around town! After I met with Bill, I went to the Medfield Public Library to help out Andrea McCoy in the children's section. Mrs. McCoy gave me a doll named Kendal, whose hair was a little rough after being played with by the little kids. I had to cut some strands since someone had cut her hair unevenly! After that, I left and went home!
For the whole day, I got the task to sort more than 4 full bins of Legos. These Legos are used for the Lego club, where kids can use their abilities to create what they envision or want. We needed to sort these Legos so that there weren't any useless Legos and non-Lego pieces that the kids couldn't use. This took the ENTIRE DAY. I also had to decrease the amount of Legos since there were way too many Legos that took up a lot of storage space that the Medfield Public Library needed.
The Legos that were put in the giveaway box were then packed into mini challenge bags. These little mini challenge bags contain a handful of random Legos with a slip of paper that gives you a challenge on what they need to make. This challenges the kids to use what Legos they have to make what's on the challenge slip. I did this for the rest of the time and even went until 3:20 doing this!
Today I spent the whole day at school! I went to Mrs. Rimbey to start drafting an email to faculty and staff to let them know about my blood drive. I also drew a layout of the space and updated Mrs. Rimbey about the meeting with Bill and what he had said about the doors being locked.
This Saturday I have the stuffed animal clinic! This is where kids bring in their stuffed animals from home and bring them to the Medfield Public Library to have for a doctor's appointment. The whole point of this mini event is to desensitize the kids for when they have to go to the doctors. With this clinic, other "doctors" will play the parts of doctors to their stuffed animals and show them that the process of going to the doctor is okay and is meant for them to get better. This can also get the kid to be less scared of the doctors on their next visit!
