Week 1
April 3 - April 4
April 3 - April 4
Today, I went to the Dedham American Red Cross donation center. In the center, I learned that the American Red Cross is divided into two branches, the biomedical and the humanitarian branches. The humanitarian branch deals with military support, disaster relief, and education services like life guard certification, CPR training/ certification, and so much more. The biomedical branch is the branch that deals with the collection of blood and everything medical.
Janice and Nancy walked and showed me around the building. I learned that the amount of appointments is based on how many phlebotomists are available. Predicting how many donors show up is a very big statistic that is very relied on. The whole process of registration and donating blood takes about a good long hour. I also learned that Janice's and Nancy's schedules can have multiple dives in different locations in one day.
This was when I arrived at the building. I took an Uber from the Medfield Public Library and got there at 10:45 in the morning. I got myself breakfast before my ride and worked on organization and my AP work. I also started setting up social media for the drive to advertise to all ages. When advertising there are very tight rules that can be very restricting. However, as long as the guidelines are followed there will not be a problem at all.
I got a tour of the lab where all the blood is packed and shipped to be tested. I learned that hospitals want universal labels when it comes to using blood. The hospitals have 42 days to use the blood or else the blood is not used. The blood is sometimes sent to the hospitals before they are tested for diseases. If the blood is found with any diseases the blood is immediately pulled from the hospital.
This is the office! I learned that the documentation process is everything and is very specific. Instructions about the place where the loading dock is, and where the blood is transferred into the truck are highly detailed. A normal drive usually has a duration of 5 hours but the set up time happens 2 hours before the 5 hours. When coordinating and planning schedules, things like breaks need to be included which can cause some donation slots to be blocked off for the staff breaks that need to be staggered throughout the day.
Today I came in at 7:15 with a bag of things that Janice and Nancy gave me. The materials included a banner, 5 different papers that describe what the American Red Cross does and the requirements for donating blood, signs, and a big bulk of stickers. All these materials will be used for the Wellness Fair next week!
This is me working in school and communicating with Janice and Nancy about the drive and their availability when they want to come to Medfield High School and see the donation space for documentation. I am also finishing up the setup of the social media and am working with Canva about the flyers. I worked for the whole day at school and am also in contact with Mrs. McCoy since I will see her on Monday. I also have had to send a lot of emails to make sure my schedule is solid.
I was working on a Canva to make a sample of a poster until my friends came up to me to catch me off guard and get a picture of me. They caught me with all my notes out but the sample flyer still came out great! I still have to make more and adjust some things but so far so good! To the right is the sample poster I made. This is very much just a prototype but it's a really good start. I will be making more next week and consulting with Nancy and Janice for their thoughts and approval! :)
