Hi! My name is Milena Arroyo-Ocasio. I am 18 years old and a senior at Medfield High School. I plan to major in Biology and become an Anatomic Pathologist. I have enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and am part of the class of 2029.
Why do I want to be an Anatomic Pathologist? Ever since I was a kid, I have always been very curious about discovering, exploring, and finding out how certain things work. Ever since I was little, I have always been good at identifying problems and finding the best possible solution to fix the problem. I have always had a love for science, and have found that science is one of my strongest subjects academically. An Anatomic Pathologist is the person who is in the labs finding out what is wrong with the sample that they are given by using lab equipment. Once the problem is found, the results of what the problem is will be sent back to the doctor who will inform the patient. Problems can be a disease, genetics, bacteria, illnesses, parasites, or anything harmful to the human body that is detected through lab equipment.
I started working with the American Red Cross when I was in 6th grade and have helped out with the Medfield Middle School blood drive since then. I started working with Senior Account Manager Janice Kafka more closely in 8th grade, and started to branch off and help out with other blood drives in other towns. For the past 5 years I have helped run registration desks at drives and have been very active in the recruitment process of donors. I have always loved to help people in need, and partnering with the American Red Cross has been one of the best decisions that I have made. With my hard work and dedication, I have been given many awards and have earned the title of Blood Program Leader.
For my senior project, I decided to start and run my blood drive with the American Red Cross. I will also be helping Andrea McCoy in the children's area of the Medfield Public Library. I will also be working closely with Nancy Hurley, who is a Donor Recruitment Account Manager, to help me with the documentation process and with running things smoothly. I will also be working with Bill Deking, who is the Capt/EMT of the Medfield Fire Department, for marketing strategies and to make sure that the blood drive is safe for staff, donors and volunteers.
This project is very important to me since I have a family member who was saved through blood transfusions and wouldn't be able to be here if it weren't for the American Red Cross. There has also been a national shortage of blood, which has left people in hospital beds in life-threatening situations. My project would not only have an impact on the nation's shortage of blood, but it would also make an impact across America.
For my inside mentor, I picked Mrs. Rimbey. I have known her since junior year and have had her as my chemistry and forensic teacher! She has always shown me so much support and taught me never to quit on my assignments and myself. I have truly learned so many life lessons with her and am so grateful to have her as my inside mentor. I know that if there is ever a problem or if I am struggling, she will help me through it no matter what. I know that she will push me to always do better in what I am doing. Whoever has her for a teacher is truly lucky since Mrs. Rimbey is one of the few teachers who will not give up or leave you to fail. She has shown me that she will go the extra mile to help. I am so excited to work with her again, and once again, thank you, Mrs. Rimbey!
