MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Colleagues,
Hopefully, you have heard about the 2023 US News and World Report college rankings that came out this week. Elms College jumped up 33 places to number 60 on the list of Best Regional Universities (North) and rose 22 slots to number 12 in the Top Performers on Social Mobility. The outside world is recognizing the great educational value that Elms College offers and it is thanks to the work that each and everyone of you do, day in and day out. Congratulations and thank you!
We are a full month into the fall semester, and it has certainly been an exciting start of the year. The campus has been bustling nonstop with events and activities and it all began with move-in weekend! I want to thank the Student Affairs and Academic Affairs teams for their collaborative efforts in executing the First-Year Welcome weekend and Elms Essential. Your organization, attention to detail, empathy, and warm welcome contributed to make this first contact with the Elms Experience a positive one for our students and their families.
I would like to take a moment to recognize the College’s Enrollment Management and Marketing team. Given that we are past Census Day, we can officially state that we have exceeded our goals for first-time freshmen and transfer students! This is no small feat, and would not have been possible without the driven commitment and unique-minded approach the team has made over the last several months to ensure we hit our goals. Student recruitment has, of course, been a cross-college collaborative effort throughout the year and everyone deserves to take great satisfaction for these very positive results. We will continue to move forward together to sustain and improve on these efforts.
The positive enrollment results have certainly helped with the Fiscal Year 2024 Budget but have not eliminated all the challenges that I have shared with you throughout the past year. Some sacrifices are still necessary for us to maintain our positive results. Finance will be sharing some related information in the next days and at the Fall Town Hall.
Among the many successful events that have taken place at the beginning of this academic year, one worth highlighting is the Western Mass. Literacy Collaborative Education Town Hall that took place on Sept. 14. Elms College’s Cynthia A. Lyons CEUE, our Education Division, along with American International College, Bay Path University and Westfield State University, joined Springfield Public Schools to form the collaborative to improve literacy rates amongst school aged children. The event was attended by leaders from colleges and school systems through greater Springfield and by more than 200 members of the general public who all support the initiative. My thanks go to Dr. Joyce Hampton, Dr. Tyra Good, and Dr. Laura Porter, for coordinating such an insightful effort and event.
Many activities will continue as we head into October, starting with the Athletic Hall of Fame celebration on October 1, continuation of the fall committee and Board meetings cycle, and the President’s Evening of Appreciation on October 21. Also, please mark your calendars for the Town Hall which will take place on Friday, October 13.
Thank you all once again for your continued service and dedication to our students and your support to one another!
With gratitude,
Harry E. Dumay, Ph.D., MBA
President

STUDENT AFFAIRS
Terry Kinsely, from the School of Nursing, and Dean of Students, Teresa Winters, have collaborated and brought a Scrub Shop to the Career Closet for the nursing students. Students have already taken advantage of it and the feedback from students has been great. They have shared that this has been really helpful for them ! This includes Elms College Clinical Scrubs and regular scrubs a nursing student might need for a job. Scrub donations can always be dropped off with Terry or in the Dean of Students Office in the college center! We also accept gently used nursing footwear and nursing student bags or backpacks. Thank you! Teresa
Fresh Check Day
The Elms College Counseling Center will be hosting Fresh Check Day again this October. Fresh Check Day aims to create an approachable and hopeful atmosphere where students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to engage in dialogue about mental health. All are welcome to attend- hope to see you there!
Peace Pole and Meditation Garden
All are welcome to come and enjoy the mindfulness/meditation garden located in the backyard of the Health and Counseling Center. Here you will find a private place to sit back, relax, and enjoy a moment of peace. You will also find our peace pole. The Peace Pole is an internationally-recognized symbol that represents the entire human family in regards to bringing peace on earth. Most Peace Poles have the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in different languages. Planting a Peace Pole is a way of bringing people together to inspire and uplift human consciousness. Peace Poles are now recognized as the most prominent international symbol and monument to peace and it reminds us to speak, think, and act in the spirit of harmony and peace.
Welcome, James Proctor!

He attended undergrad at Syracuse University as a pre-medical student, and has now found himself here at Elms College studying for a Master's in Biotechnology. As the wellness grad for the 2023-2024 year, he is excited to not only engage in student life on campus, but promote positive mental health practices and awareness on behalf of the Health and Counseling Center.

INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT
Summer Social
The perfect way to end summer. On August 30 over 80 alums, faculty, and staff enjoyed sangria, appetizers, and good company on the Keating Quadrangle. We recognized our amazing Institutional Advancement volunteers for all the help they have provided us throughout this past year. We already can't wait to see everyone again!
PUBLIC SAFETY
Public Safety has been conducting Active Threat Training sessions with individual campus departments and their teams throughout the campus this summer. As we begin the fall semester approximately 85% of campus Staff has completed the training. We are in the process of scheduling the remaining departments as well as coordinating with Faculty representatives to schedule their members for training this Fall.
Active threat training will be delivered directly to Residential Students this Fall, and open sessions will be conducted for commuter students as well.
Public Safety also completed anual City Code & Fire Inspections in early August, along with Sprinkler, Fire Alarm, and Fire Extinguisher recertifications. We are in the final phases of the review process and expect to meet all compliance requirements.
A key takeaway from the City inspections this year was the use of extension cords on campus. City codes prohibit the use of extension cords to permanently power large appliances. All appliances are to be plugged directly into a wall outlet. The use of a power bar is restricted to small appliances, and should never be linked together to connect an appliance that is too far away from a wall outlet. Extension cords must be monitored when in use and removed once the task is completed.
Public Safety has provided direct assistance and guidance to Staff and Faculty on the proper use of power bars in the office environment, working with facilities and Collins Electric (Elms Contractor) to add additional wall outlets where required.
In conclusion , Public Safety would like to thank the campus community for their patience and cooperation in helping to make the Elms Safe for all.
CAMPUS MINISTRY
Campus Ministry hosted their annual pre-semester program, First-Year Encounter: Community and Solidarity in the Spirit of Dorothy Day, from August 28th-September 1st. One '23 graduate returned as the FYE Program Assistant, eight returning students served as Student Leaders, and ten first-year students served as new participants. Throughout the week, students volunteered at five local charity organizations: The Gray House, Jewish Family Service of Western MA, United Way of Pioneer Valley, Homework House, and Hartsprings Foundation. They spent time organizing donations, serving food, gardening, and preparing tutoring classrooms. Students also participated in evening activities, including bowling at Shaker Bowl, kayaking at Holyoke Rows, a campus scavenger hunt, and nightly reflections. Campus Ministry is grateful for the hard work these students did in our community and the opportunity to help them acclimate to a new academic year at Elms!

TECH TIP!
Protect Yourself: Don’t Take the Bait! Recognizing Phishing Emails 🎣🐟
In our ever-connected world, phishing attacks have become increasingly sophisticated, and it’s more crucial than ever to be vigilant. The Elms IT Department wants to provide you with tips to help you spot phishing emails and protect yourself and our organization’s data.
Tip #1: Check the sender’s email address. Frequently, a scammer will try to send a fake email under a fictitious email that appears similar to that of the college’s. As a reminder, Elms College emails always end with either an @elms.edu or @student.elms.edu. An example of a fake email may be something like: elmscollege@gmail.com.
Tip #2: Be Wary of Ugent or Threatening Language. Phishing emails often create a sense of urgency or fear to manipulate you into taking action. If an email pressures you to act immediately or threatens consequences, take a step back and scrutinize it carefully.
Tip #3: Hover Over Links. Before clicking on any links in an email, hover your mouse pointer over them (on a computer) or press and hold (on a mobile device). This action will reveal the true destination of the link in the status bar. If it doesn’t match the expected URL, it’s a red flag.
Tip #4: Be Cautious of Attachments. Never click on or download a file, picture, or any attachment unless you are 100% certain that you know what it is and that it is from a reliable, trusted source.
Tip #5: Verify Requests for Sensitive Information. Legitimate organizations won’t ask you to provide sensitive data (example: password, credit card number, etc. ) via email. If you receive such a request, confirm it’s authenticity through a trusted channel, such as a phone call or an official website.
By staying vigilant and following these tips, you can help protect yourself and Elms College from falling victim to phishing attacks.
The IT Department has created resources that are available on Elms College about email security and phishing that can be found here, or by going to the Elms Connect website and looking under the Information Technology section with the heading “Security Alerts”.
Remember, it is always better to be cautious than sorry! If you ever have any questions about a suspicious email, please contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@elms.edu.
