MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Colleagues,
I would like once again to sincerely thank the Elms College campus community for completing a successful academic year. The month of May certainly flew by as quickly as it arrived. Commencement, along with all the celebratory events leading up to it, exemplified just how much of a unified force the Elms family is and the lengths to which we go to advocate for -and support- our students and one another. Every division, every department, every individual is essential and plays a key role in our students’ achievements.
Let me take this opportunity to officially welcome Dr. Joyce Hampton in her role as Vice President of Academic Affairs. I look forward to working with Joyce as she leads the Elms academic enterprise. Please join me also in extending an Elms College welcome to Devon Janecko and Richard O'Connor who started respectively as Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Director of Financial Aid on May 28.
The summer months will remain busy with transitions, ongoing recruitment efforts, and opportunities to strategize and plan for the upcoming academic year.
As I previously shared with the community, VP of Enrollment Management and Marketing, Lukman Arsalan, informed the College that he is resigning from his position effective June 30. Please join me in thanking Lukman for his time of service to the College. We wish him the best in his future endeavors. As mentioned, the College has identified an Interim Vice President of Enrollment Management and Marketing, Patrick Quinn, who will be on campus periodically over the next couple of weeks and starting his full-time post on June 24. Let us all make Patrick feel welcome as he dives into this very critical position, working to finish enrolling the fall 2024 class.
The first summer Blazer Day takes place on June 27! Blazer Day is an all-day event where newly accepted students will meet with various groups on campus including Orientation Leaders, Center for Student Success, Student Accounts, Financial Aid, Campus Ministry, Student Engagement, among many others. I would like to thank Student Affairs, and specifically Claire Wright, for their expertise in coordinating and executing these key events.
The FAFSA rollout and its effect on enrollment continue to present a significant challenge for the College, resulting in first-time freshman deposits lagging far behind previous years. I want to recognize the Enrollment Management team in their efforts to recruit newly accepted students and retain our current students. As mentioned above, we all play a crucial role in the enrollment and success of our students. Let us all continue to work collectively and creatively on strategies for student enrollment and success.
Cabinet and Deans will meet on July 17 for the annual Summer Retreat to focus on team building, advance the work on the new strategic plan: PRISM Blazing Brighter Together, and setting priorities for the 2024-2025 academic year.
The Office of Institutional Advancement will continue their efforts to close what has been thus far a very successful year in fundraising.
The Finance Office will work on closing the books on fiscal year 2024 and continue to work with Budget Managers throughout the College to finalize the fiscal year 2025 budget.
The Board of Trustees' Retreat, in early August, will provide Trustees an opportunity to review the draft strategic plan and to help the College prioritize among competing priorities for the year to come.
While this work continues, I urge everyone to make sure that you carve out some well-deserved time off during these summer months to rest and rejuvenate. Thank you for the countless hours and sacrifices you all have made to make our students’ dreams a reality.
I am grateful for all you do for the College and for each other!
Harry E. Dumay, Ph.D., MBA
President

SCHOOL OF NURSING: MED SURG OLYMPICS
On May 2nd Elms junior nursing students competed in the annual Med Surg Olympics to celebrate the end of year and upcoming Nurse's Week (May 5th-May 11th). Non-junior students volunteered to help run the event. Kudos to Emma Coleman, Kurt Bordas, and Auxanna Newall for taking the lead in planning. David Bennett's clinical group David's Queens won the event. It was a great way to wrap up the semester.
SCHOOL OF NURSING: DNP PROJECTS
The DNP Program is pleased to showcase the Class of 2023 graduates and their DNP quality improvement scholarly projects. Through a collaborative venture between Debbie Gomes, Associate Director, Head of Library Technology, and Teresa K. Reske, Director of the DNP Program, they created a repository of project abstracts beginning with this class. Their plan is to continue listing DNP graduates’ DNP Projects on the Elms Alumnae library website. The DNP Project incorporates evidence-based strategies for implementing and achieving health care or systems level outcomes, is conducted by the student following the rigor of a structured quality improvement process, and deemed appropriate by a practice or health care setting. Each project reflects the culmination of a student’s academic work to earn their Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and demonstrates the student’s ability to organize, analyze, and synthesize a body of knowledge. The DNP Project is a student driven, faculty-guided scholarly experience.

ELMS DNP GRAD JAINES ANDRADES TESTIFIES TO U.S. SENATE COMMITEE ON NEED FOR HEALTHCARE DIVERSITY
Jaines Andrades BSN ’14, DNP ’20, testified recently before a U.S. Senate Subcommittee about ways the federal government needs to address the growing problem of too few minorities choosing careers in healthcare.
Andrades spoke May 2, 2024, in Washington, D.C., during a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing, chaired by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Also testifying was Yolanda Lawson, president of the National Medical Association, who spoke of how a lack of representation in the number of doctors and nurses can cause distrust among minority populations toward the entire healthcare system.
Andrades, a Springfield native who now works as a trauma surgery nurse practitioner at Baystate Medical Center, said Congress needs to do more to address the cost of education, which is the biggest barrier to minority students and those from low-income families finding careers in healthcare.
“Helping fund the education of minority students interested in becoming professional healthcare providers is a wise investment,” Andrades said. “It connects people with practical careers which would allow them economic stability to support themselves and their families.”
She was introduced to the committee by Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-LA, who spoke of how she has dedicated her career to helping vulnerable populations, beginning with her first days as a registered nurse at the Hampden County House of Correction and later at the Baystate Mason Square Neighborhood Clinic.
“Her commitment to being a voice for the disenfranchised has allowed her to be a change agent and a role model for others,” Cassidy said.
Andrades spoke of her experiences as the child of a single mother who had no means to send her to college. What her mother did give her, she said, was a strong work ethic.
While a student at Elms College, Andrades worked at Baystate as a janitor cleaning the same procedure and surgical rooms that she now uses to treat patients. Her colleagues at the hospital helped point her toward different scholarship and interest-free loan programs that helped her with her tuition. Without that help, she would not have known the programs existed.
Andrades supports Congress providing more funding available for grants and low-interest student loans, and making tuition free at community colleges. She also spoke of the government backing employer-based programs, like Baystate’s “Baystate Springfield Educational Partnership,” which helps connect Springfield students with people employed in different areas of healthcare. All of these could make healthcare careers an appealing option for minorities and those from low-income homes.
She said to increase diversity in healthcare, there needs to be a robust system of college and career planning in place, and it needs to be promoted heavily to let those who could benefit know about it.
“Making students at all schools, most especially those in lower-income areas, aware of healthcare as an obtainable career opportunity would go so far in letting the students know it is within their reach,” she said.
It is also critically important to promote “that there are resources available to them to embark on their journey to higher education.”
She spoke of how when she was attending the Roger L. Putnam Vocational High School in Springfield, she had a dream of becoming a lawyer but had no idea of how to make it come true. Instead, she was enrolled in the school’s cosmetology program.
She never considered a career in health care until a chance meeting with a nurse during a routine medical visit with her mother while in high school. While talking, the nurse told Andrades she should consider going into nursing.
After graduating from Elms College in 2014, she worked as a registered nurse at the health clinic in Mason Square. It was there that colleagues encouraged her to become a nurse practitioner, and she returned to Elms College to earn her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2020.
CEUE PARTICIPATES IN THE DAVIS FOUNDATION'S LITERACY ROUNDTABLE EVENT!
The Elms College Team had a great turnout yesterday for the Davis Foundation's Literacy Roundtable event. We were able to engage and network with local and state education leaders who are advancing the work of equity and literacy in teacher preparation to support PK-12 students. The WMLC was credited by DESE as the impetus for them creating the Early Literacy Grant opportunity.
Westfield SD is interested in learning more about joining as a school partner; Holyoke SD wants to reengage in the school partnership discussion; and Superintendent Ware said that Chicopee SD will definitely sign on as a school partner next year. Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler said that he is looking forward to accepting Dr. Dumay's long standing invitation to visit Elms' campus.
It was an honor to represent Elms College, the CEUE, and the WMLC as the voice for how our innovative concept is providing a culturally responsive solution to the literacy crisis in our region. Here we come CNN Heroes!!!
