MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Colleagues,
It is true what they say that time flies while you’re having fun! This past month has been filled with nonstop activities and the start of end-of-the-year celebrations. It is hard to believe that we are a few short weeks away from celebrating our graduates as they embark onto the next chapter in their lives. We should all take pride that we have prepared them to effect positive changes in the community and in the world, supported by the values of our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph.
The month of April was book-ended with events for prospective students and their families. On April 6, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions held the spring Open House. And this past weekend, we welcomed prospective students and their families at Accepted Students Day! I would like to thank associate director of admissions, Michelle Proulx, and the entire undergraduate admissions team for their unyielding efforts in reaching out to prospective students and informing them about the value of an Elms College education. Thank you to everyone who contributed to these very important events for the campus, where prospective students got a glimpse into what life would be like if they chose Elms as their home for the next four years.
Also taking place this past weekend was the 2nd annual E.L.M.S. Awards (Engagement, Leadership, Merit, and Service) where a group of students were celebrated for their hard work, their dedication, and their outstanding service to the campus. Thank you to director of student engagement, Claire Wright, for all the preparation that went into an uplifting event.
The first Donor Scholar Brunch since 2019 was very successfully hosted by the Office of Institutional Advancement. It was also excinting to host Honors Convocation in person for the first time since COVID! Additional events just to name a few that took place this month included the Sister Anna Maria Walsh Lecture featuring Sister Mary Caritas, the Chicopee Chamber After 5, and Lavender Graduation. Thank you to everyone involved with all these events that added life to our campus community.
The 6th annual Dolores Donlin Noonan ’39 Experiential Learning Showcase was a hit. We could not have asked for a more beautiful day to witness applied learning in action from a variety of disciplines. Thank you to Dr. Jenny Granger Sullivan, the staff, faculty, and volunteers who contributed to another robust, successful event this year!
Allow me once again to congratulate Dr. Joyce Hampton for her selection to serves as our next Vice President of Academic Affairs, after a competitive national search. Dr. Hampton has consistently progressed through the ranks during her 34 years here at the College. I look forward to working more closely with her in her new role. In the next weeks, we will also find an appropriate time to thank Dr. Susan Dunton for her efforts to lead Academic Affairs during the 2023 academic year.
We still have quite a packed agenda for the first weeks of May before we close the academic year. The Board of Trustees will gather on May 10 for its final meeting of the fiscal year. Commencement week will give us an opportunity to stop and celebrate the accomplishments of the class of 2024. Their accomplishments are your accomplishments, you the faculty and staff who recruited them, inspired them, taught them, supported them, and guided them along their individual journeys.
As we look back, the spring semester has presented us with unexpected staff transitions and other difficulties. The next months will have their own challenges, especially with an admission cycle that has been marred by the difficulties associated with FAFSA.
Commencement Day on May 18 will remind us why we persevere through all these challenges on behalf of our students. And every day, as we stop in the hallway to talk to a colleague about their loved ones or their hobby, as we witness small acts of kindness, we are reminded of the reasons why we support and uplift one another to form our vibrant and supportive community.
As we enter Exam Week and head to Commencement Week, I want to wish everyone a good end to the academic year.
I continue to be grateful for all that you do for our students and for one another to advance the mission of the College. I hope you will join me in finding some time to rest, reflect, and refresh this summer.
Harry E. Dumay, Ph.D., MBA

SCHOOL OF NURSING
The Elms School of Nursing has received a generous donation of three high fidelity newborn mannequins. Each mannequin simulates the look and soothing needs of a critical care crying newborn (one with fetal alcohol syndrome, one addicted to methamphetamines, and one with a translucent skull so that the brain damage can be illustrated from unsafe handling).
The mannequins will be used to supplement learning in our Families & Children and Population Health courses. Thank you to our secret gift giving Elms Alum for this incredible donation!!

CAMPUS MINISTRY
On March 25, participants in the March 2024 trips shared a dinner and reflection with Dr. Dumay and Dr. Coston. It is always wonderful to gather again as a trips group to remember and reflect on the impact of the trips, as well as remember in prayer the people with whom we walked during our trips.
Dr. Tyra Good spoke at Agape Latte on April 4, delighting the group with her presentation, The Journey of Becoming a #GOODEducator: Doing it for the Kingdom! Dr.Good shared the role faith has played in her journey to higher education. Her wonderful presentation was uplifting, highlighting how she continues to be committed to her work through not only CEUE, and also through her work across the country in creating culturally responsive classrooms. Thank you, Dr. Good!
On April 5, Elms College students and staff participated in volunteer service at Gray House, Homework House, Genesis Spiritual Life Center and Open Pantry Community Services at South Congregational Church.
Work included light yard work, organizing and cleaning of rooms, odd jobs around the sites that staff did not have time to complete, and serving lunch and clean-up. All who participated were happy to take some time away from campus and work alongside our dear neighbors in the local community!
In collaboration with Student Activities Board, Campus Ministry sponsored a table for Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Day of Strength on Monday, April 8. Information shared included stickers, prayer cards for victims of abuse, and information on the topic of Toxic Spirituality.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, & JUSTICE: ENCOUNTER: ELMS FOR EQUITY RETREAT
The first Encounter, an Elms for Equity Retreat, took place April 12-April 14, 2024 at Prindle Pond Conference Center in Charlton, MA. Together with our 9 student participants, and with grant-funding support from Interfaith America/ACCU, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion collaborated with Campus Ministry to bring this special one-of-a-kind experience to life. We also had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Tyra Good, the Executive Director of the Cynthia A Lyons Center for Equity in Urban Education and two alumni, Pedro DeJesus (Class of '22), current Graduate Assistant in the Office of D&I, and Nadia French Graham (Class of '23), former President of MSC.
Throughout the weekend, student participants engaged in prayer, guided reflection and meditation, community building experiences, and a workshop by Dr. GOOD on being social change agents in a globalized world. We centered the retreat around the theme of "building bridges"--with God and our higher power, with nature, with our own inner lives and with one another. Each retreat participant truly came with open minds and open hearts and worked beautifully together to create a safe space for one another to share stories, reflect on their inspiring spiritual journeys, and think about how they might show up better to listen to one another, advocate for one another, and learn how to communicate with one another in spite of our differences. Students also created a mandala made from items from nature collected throughout the weekend, symbolizing and honoring the transformation that occurred through this unique shared experience.
There were a lot of tears and a whole lot of laughter. Special time was built in for creative crafting, nature walks, campfires, naps and yes, board games!! We sure ate well too!! It was an awesome, inspiring experience and we cannot wait to return to the beautiful Prindle Pond very soon for another Encounter Retreat! Stay tuned...
MSC - A YEAR IN REVIEW
That's a Wrap! MSC has officially closed out a full year of creative, inclusive programming for the Elms Campus community. The annual Rep Your Flag/For the Culture event was simply EPIC! A vibrant array of cultural dress, dance, music--and food!--filled the quad with a one-of-a-kind energy! True Colors President, Arhijey Villon Nahue won the coveted top prize as she represented her ancestral land of Peru. This followed on the heels of a fun week of events celebrating PRIDE at Elms, including flag trivia, art night, the fan-fave Rainbow Day on the Quad and a powerful Queer Poetry Slam co-created with QElms. We closed the week with the second annual Lavender Graduation, celebrating our LGBTQ+ graduates. During Women's History Month, WOCA brought back the popular "Let's Talk about it. Period" week to help educate our campus community on health topics central to BIPOC women's lives. WOCA and MOCA also held their first "Debate" discussing gender roles, identities and relationships. Grad Assistant Kiyana came ready to mediate dauning her referee's shirt! Another highlight of the year was MOCA's first annual Black Expo, inviting black/brown-owned businesses from across the Pioneer Valley as vendors and performers to join together in a celebratory evening--MOCA Moms came too with their incredible catering skills! Last but not least, LXU held a Noche de Baile--a festive and joyful occasion to kick-start our upcoming REFRESH of Latinx Unidos at Elms! Stay tuned in ways to get involved in the Fall. True Colors collaborated closely with the Social Work Students Organization throughout the year to bring powerful documentaries and films to our Library Theater, sparking important conversations. And of course, MSC loves to collaborate with SAB to "kick-off" the school year for all students! So we will see you there again this fall! We want to thank you for attending our events and learning with us as we continue to grow into the largest organization on Elms College campus!!! Please join us in saying farewell to seven of our graduating senior leaders and welcoming in 14 students to our Eboards for the 2024-2025 year! Have a terrific summer, Blazer family!
DEAR NEIGHBOR PLAY VIDEO LINK

We invite you to take some time and view the link as you learn about the remarkable Sisters of St. Joseph! The play was directed by Elizabeth Gourde, class of 2023.
