MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the new academic year! As I’ve mentioned many times before, this is one of my most-loved times of year. Many thanks to the Institutional Advancement team for helping us to say goodbye officially to summer yesterday, with the Sweet Summer Social on the quad yesterday. It was great to see many of you there.
This weekend, we will be welcoming new and returning students as they move into the residence halls and participate in the many activities scheduled around New Student Orientation and Elms Essentials. After these restful summer months, the campus will again be buzzing with excitement as we all come together as a community to provide our students with the tools necessary for them to become effective and respected leaders. Thank you to Student Affairs and Academic Affairs for leading the effort to welcome new students and to all the volunteers who will participate in that effort.
As noted in my last newsletter message, although the campus seemed quiet these past couple of months, much work was still happening behind the scenes:
As announced previously to the community, Dr. Walter Breau will transition from his current role as Vice President of Academic Affairs to Executive Dean of the Kirley School of Continuing Education effective September 1. Let me take this opportunity to thank Dr. Breau for his leadership of Academic Affairs over many years and for his continued service to the College. I look forward to our work together on advancing the Kirley School of Continuing Education.
Similarly, Dr. Elizabeth Hukowicz will continue as the Dean for Student Success and as a Full Professor of Education. I am also grateful for Dr. Huckowicz's continued dedication. I am excited about her continued leadership of Student Success and the additional support that she will provide to our Education Division.
Also as announced previously, I am pleased that Dr. Susan B. Dunton will assume the position of Vice President of Academic Affairs on an interim basis. A search for a permanent replacement for the Vice President of Academic Affairs position will take place during this academic year. Dr. Dunton is a seasoned academic administrator with a wealth of experience in academic policy, curriculum review, and strategic planning in both permanent and interim placements at similarly sized Catholic colleges. Dr. Dunton will start her position on Wednesday, September 6. You may see me walking around campus with her as I introduce her to various colleagues. Please do not hesitate to introduce yourself and to join me in giving her a warm Elms College welcome.
The Board of Trustees had a productive and successful retreat on campus on August 9. Among other topics, the Board reviewed the current Continuing Education program. The Education Advisory Board (EAB) gave a presentation on the current landscape while providing strategies the College may consider to both increase and retain continuing education enrollment. The Board was presented with the framing and timeline for the next strategic plan and brainstormed on its high-level priorities. We look forward to sharing those priorities and timeline for the new strategic plan with you at the next campus Town Hall scheduled for October 4.
On Thursday, September 14th, the College is hosting the Western Massachusetts Literacy Collaborative Town Hall event from 4:30 -7:30 p.m. to showcase the work that was done this summer by our Cynthia A. Lyons CEUE and our Education Division. With collaborations from partner institutions, Bay Path University, AIC, Westfield State University, and the Springfield Publid Schools, they designed the Summer Learn and Earn Literacy Corps, a multi-pronged model to address the urgent reading needs of the students and public schools in the Greater Springfield area. This is a high-profile event, in which we will screen the film A Right to Read and hear from a panel. We will welcome fellow college presidents, local superintendents, stakeholders, and dignitaries in attendance. You can learn more about the event and register to attend by visiting https://www.elms.edu/events/western-mass-literacy-collaborative-plans-education-town-hall/.
These are just a few of the initiatives that took place this summer and the transitions happening with the beginning of the new academic year. As we hit the ground running over the next few weeks, I encourage you all to step out of your offices, walk the campus, welcome new colleagues, and get to know our students and their goals and dreams. Along with Faith, Justice, and Excellence – Community is one of the College’s core values – let us continue to build the lasting relationships that make our campus the tight-knit environment in which our students can thrive and accomplish their aspirations.
Transitions can be a bit unsettling but, with our continued focus on moving forward together, I am confident that we will remain united in advancing the mission of the College.
I wish you all a vibrant start to the academic year! Thank you for all that you do for our students and for one another.
With gratitude,
Harry E. Dumay, Ph.D., MBA
President
