You may need letters of recommendation for:
College applications, letters of appeal if you are deferred or wait-listed, jobs, scholarships, etc.
If a letter of recommendation is not required for your application, you do not need to send one.
When requesting letters of recommendation, consider the following points:
Plan ahead: Students should ask for a reference or letter of recommendation in person, if at all possible. They should allow their recommender at least two weeks to write their letter.
Be professional: There is an important etiquette to request letters of recommendation from teachers, whether face to face or in writing. (i.e.) “ Dear Mr....” not, “Hey, can you write me a letter?” If the person agrees, offer to provide them what they need, like a list of activities, resume, etc. Follow up with a thank you letter or face to face thank you
Resumes are key! When you ask someone for a letter of recommendation, you will need to provide them with a copy of your resume. Some teachers may also use Google forms for student information; use this as an opportunity to provide them with as much relevant information as possible so that they can write the best letter for you.
Consider who would be a valuable reference: If your college requires letters of recommendations, be sure that you are asking someone who can speak to your skills, talents, and abilities in relation to your intended major. For example, if you intend to major in the area of STEM, consider asking a math teacher and a science teacher who know you well.
Be appreciative: Be sure that you are thanking those who write a letter of recommendation for you. Showing your gratitude builds the relationship and invites them to offer help again later, should you need it.
Double check: Please make sure you actually need a letter of recommendation. Some colleges/universities don’t require them. Common App’s list of required recs is here.
If you have checked the list linked above and the university that you are applying to requires a letter of recommendation from your school counselor, please click the following link and complete your counselor's Google Form to request a letter at least one month prior to your anticipated deadline.
