There are a variety of reasons why a student would apply Early Decision or Early Action to a university: they want to receive an admissions decision as early as possible, they have all of their application materials ready to go by the ED or EA deadline, they have a definite top choice and want to ensure they have the best chance at earning admission, etc. Applying early can boost your interest quotient (IQ) by confirming to the university that you are fully committed to attending and can give your application an edge; however, you want to be certain that you are choosing the admission process that is right for you. To the right, you will find the commonly used application processes along with a description for each.
Early Decision 1 vs Early Decision 2
ED1 typically has a November 1 deadline, with decisions released in December
ED2 has a later deadline, typically in January with decisions released in February
Applicants cannot apply both ED1 and ED2 at the same time
Both are binding contracts, if accepted
Applicants must wait to receive their ED1 decision before submitting an ED2 application.
Applicants can apply ED2 to a school if they were rejected from their ED1 school.
Applicants may choose to only apply ED2 and not ED1
If an applicant is deferred from their ED1 school, and applies ED2 to another school and is accepted, they must withdraw their deferred application from their ED1 school immediately. If the ED1 application is not withdrawn, acceptance to the ED2 school may be withdrawn.
