3) Tell students to find 5 debatable topics that are appropriate for middle schoolers and are interesting for them.

4) Choose 2-4 topics as a class based on group size.

6) Each Groups Chooses the following roles: Teacher will serve as Moderator and all other students observing will serve as judges.

• Lead Debater/Constructor -- presents the main points/arguments for his or her team's stand on the topic of the debate, assists with research (this person will be in the “fishbowl”)
• Lead Researcher/Recorder -- guides the team’s research and assigns roles for other team members
• Visual Creator/Researcher -- creates any visuals for the team to assist with presenting their argument, assists with research
