Spring 2
Spring 2
Welcome back to another half term and a brand new topic - Victorians! This week we've been looking at Victorian artefacts and trying to work out what they are and how they would have been used. We had some really fantastic guesses! We're starting to build up a picture of what life was like in a Victorian home.
We thought this might be a Victorian pizza pan with an extra long arm to slide the pizza into the oven! We found out it was a Victorian bed warmer.
This week, Year 1 have been learning a little more about the value of different coins. For homework, we’d like you to continue looking at coins up to £1 and using coins to make different amounts. We’d also like you to play this interactive game at home:
https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/customCars/index.html
Children can design their own car and use coins to ‘pay’ for the extras. They can select their own level to suit them, but if they need more challenge they could:
try the next level up
challenge themselves to make the totals in different ways. For example:
Can you swap your 10p coin for 5ps? Can you use 2p pieces instead? How many 2p pieces would you need?
What’s the smallest amount of coins you can use to pay for this item?
Can you make this amount using only silver coins? Only copper coins?
Can you make this amount using exactly 5 coins? 6 coins? etc.
Have fun!
The Year 1 Team
We had such a fantastic time on our Victorian Day this week. We all looked brilliant dressed up in our Victorian costumes and threw ourselves into all of the Victorian roleplay activities.
The hall was turned into a giant Victorian house and were very busy all morning pretending to be servants. Among other activities, we:
had a go at laying the fancy table
prepared food in the Victorian kitchen
swept and cleaned the house
polished shoes, darned socks and gave the butler a shave
slaved away in the Victorian laundry room
practised our writing in the Victorian school room, using a pen and ink
made a beautiful fan and practised our embroidery
In the afternoon, we split into groups to practise some acts for a Musical Hall performance to celebrate Queen Victoria's Jubilee. We had actors, singers, acrobats and even mind-readers!
Keep your eyes peeled for photos coming soon!
