Take a look at all of the recorded PD options you can complete asynchronously on Active Learning and Google Slides, and Pear Deck. Use the following hyperlinks to take you to the PD recording of your choice. You can also find them on our ETCN YouTube page.
Overview of the Asynchronous PD
For this professional development, we are learning about 10 instructional strategies that can help our students actively learning during synchronous and asynchronous learning settings. The 10 active learning strategies discussed range from Quickwrites, Concept Mapping, Social-Emotional Learning, Metacognition/Self-Assessment, Frayer Vocabulary, Formative Assessment, Retrieval Practice, and Multiple Choice Polling. Additionally, all of these strategies are Universal Design for Learning friendly. Throughout the video, I discuss the strategy, how to build the slide, and how to facilitate the strategy in your classroom. Each of these strategies can be used to teach any type of content or skill. To finalize the training, you are asked to create your own Pear Deck Google Slideshow with a number of strategies for a lesson you will be teaching. Then, you are asked to share your created Pear Deck slideshow with your colleagues so they can view what you have created.
Note: Below the video and asynchronous Pear Deck is the full Google Slideshow where you can make a copy and utilize it for your class.
Objective: Teachers will learn 10 active learning strategies they can integrate with Pear Deck as well as create a short lesson Pear Deck slideshow that they will share with their colleagues.
Directions: Watch the video to the right and complete the asynchronous Pear Deck simultaneously on the left. You can pause and start the video whenever you would like. Additionally, you can move back and forth between the interactive slides displaying each of the strategies on the Pear Deck asynchronous slideshow.
Start the video the right. Then, begin the slideshow to the left of the video to get started.
After watching the video and completing the asynchronous slideshow, you will be asked to build your own slideshow.
Go to Google Drive and then create a new Google Slideshow. Then, be sure to activate the Pear Deck Add-on.
Create your slideshow for a lesson or mini lesson you would like to teach in the future.
Share your created Pear Deck Google Slideshow of your lesson with your colleagues so they can view it.

Part 1: Introduction and Background Information on Nearpod
Introduction to Interactive Slides: Nearpod & Pear Deck
On 9/3/2021, we had our very first ETCN EdTech LIVE PD that was hosted by the Poway ESL Department. We focused on introducing teachers to interactive slides. Today’s byte-sized PD focuses on the basics of getting started with interactive slides. We are going to show you how to access both Nearpod and Pear Deck add-on’s on Google Slides so you can experiment with them. Read the following section and then move onto Part 2 for the interactive asynchronous professional learning opportunity!
Directions: Please read the description introducing interactive slids and then watch the video of the training that was conducted. Below the embedded video, you will have access the slideshow used, which you can interact asynchronously at your own pace as you watch the professional development session.
What are Interactive Slides?
What are interactive slides? They are traditional Google Slides that have a special add-on that makes them interactive for students to write and draw on them while you are presenting them in your live online or in-person classrooms. A great adaptation to interactive slides is your ability to provide students with feedback as well as see their progress as you move through your lesson. This allows you to provide active learning opportunities and feedback simultaneously, which will create a fun and engaging lesson for your students. Also, in terms of prep, it does not take long to prep your lessons as you can take your current slideshows and transform them into interactive slides!

Access to Interactive Slides
Currently, Poway has a district license for Nearpod and Vista and Escondido have a district license for Pear Deck. There are some aspects of each you can utilize for free. However, when it comes down to it, you can integrate the same strategies using the same tools.
Strategies/Activities for Interactive Slides
You can do a wide range of strategies and activities ranging from social-emotional learning, quickwrites, drag and drop, flashcards, bulletin boards, exit slips for formative assessment, and student reflection. This is just the tip of the iceberg! Both Pear Deck and Nearpod can be used for all of these strategies and activities.
Part 2: Asynchronous Professional Development Training
Objective: Teachers will learn the basic features of Nearpod and several active learning strategies that can be integrated with the slides to amplify the learning of your students.
Directions: Complete the professional development by going through the Nearpod asynchronously (on the left below) while watching the recorded video (on the right below) from the training (see below) at the same time. For both the Neaprod slides and the video, you have the ability to move between the slides at your own pace and pause and start the video whenever you would like throughout the professional development training. Below the Nearpod embed is the Google Slides for this training you can view and download. Please be sure to download them when you get a chance to always have them in your Google Drive.
