Canvas Tutorial for Students
Welcome to the world of Canvas LMS! As an essential platform in modern education, Canvas makes online learning smooth and interactive. Each video corresponds with the written tutorial below. Canvas Dashboard Tutorial 1 - Dashboard
Objective: Familiarize yourself with the Canvas Dashboard and its various features.
Logging In: Access your schools Canvas URL and log in with your credential → portal.educationtocareer.net
Login in with your username first letter of first name and last name followed by the school you are enrolled in - Ex: jsmith@vas.educationtocareer.net, jsmith@pas.educationtocareer.net, or jsmith@eas.educationtocareer.net.
You will create your own password during your first login to Canvas.
Main Dashboard View: Once logged in, you’ll be greeted by the Dashboard. Here, you’ll see course cards for each class you're enrolled in. Each card represents a course and has a distinct color for easy identification.
To-Do List: On the right side, you'll notice a "To-Do" list. This provides reminders about pending assignments, discussions, and quizzes.
Global Navigation: On the left, you'll see icons for Home, Courses, Calendar, Inbox, and more. This is your go-to for quickly navigating the Canvas environment.
Customization: Click on the three dots on each course card to change its color or move its position. Additionally, by selecting ‘Account’ on the far left, you can adjust personal settings and upload a profile picture.
Canvas Tutorial 2 - Canvas Course Page Navigation
Objective: Understand how to navigate inside a specific course and access its content.
Entering a Course: From the Dashboard, click on a course card.
Course Home Page: You'll land on the Course Home Page, which typically provides an overview, announcements, or a course summary.
Course Navigation Bar: On the left side, find links to Home, Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Grades, and more. These allow you to access different areas within the course.
Syllabus: The syllabus page (if utilized by your instructor) gives an overview of course content and a chronological list of assignments.
Grades: Click on ‘Grades’ to see your scores on assignments, tests, and discussions.
Modules: If your instructor uses Modules, they group content like lectures, readings, quizzes, and assignments into organized sections.
Canvas Tutorial 3 - Responding to Teacher Assignments and Activities on Canvas through Content Creation
Objective: Learn how to efficiently respond to your instructor's activities, ensuring you participate and submit your coursework appropriately.
Assignments:
Navigate to your desired course.
Click on ‘Assignments’ from the left sidebar.
Open the assignment you wish to complete. Read the instructions provided by your teacher.
Click ‘Submit Assignment’ on the right side.
You can upload a file, write text, submit URLs, or share media depending on the assignment requirements. Make sure to hit ‘Submit’ once done.
Discussions:
Click on ‘Discussions’ on the left sidebar.
Select the discussion topic you'd like to participate in.
Click on ‘Reply’ beneath the discussion prompt or to another student’s post if you’re responding to them.
Type your response in the provided text box. You can also add media or links if needed. Click ‘Post Reply’ once done.
Quizzes:
Navigate to ‘Quizzes’ from the left sidebar.
Select the quiz you need to take.
Read the instructions and guidelines, such as the time limit and the number of attempts allowed.
Click ‘Take the Quiz’ to start.
Answer the questions using the provided formats: multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, essay, etc.
Click ‘Submit Quiz’ when you’ve completed all questions. Ensure you finish before the timer runs out (if there's a time limit).
Feedback and Grades:
Once you’ve submitted assignments or taken quizzes, you can often receive feedback from your instructor.
To see this, click on ‘Grades’ from the left sidebar.
Here, you'll find scores, comments, and annotations. They can guide you on what you did well or where you might need improvement.
Messaging for Clarification:
If you're unsure about an assignment or have questions, use Canvas' built-in messaging system.
Click on 'Inbox' from the global left sidebar.
Create a new message, select your course and instructor, type your message, and hit ‘Send’. Always be respectful and clear in your communication.
