READING
In Week 8 during Reading we have been learning how to infer from visuals. We used the book The little Refugee and practised the skill of inferring. We noted what we can see, wrote what we think the visuals meant and used evidence from the text to explain why we think this.
We also watched Behind the News about Harmony Day. We were then given a hand to fill in about our culture, and decorate however we like.
In Week 9 and 10 during reading we practised the skill visualising so we can understand a text more clearly and make the story come alive in our minds. We did this by listening to different passages from books and drawing what we saw in our minds and explain what we could see. We also used soundscapes and while listening to the sound drew what we thought what we could hear.
WRITING
In Writing we have continued writing our fractured fairytales. We explored rising actions and how to write a climax to our story with anengaging solution to our problem. We then used ARMS and CUPS to revise and edit our writing so that we could publish our fractured fairytale. We then spent the remainder of our time in writing publishing our chosen piece.
We investigated what a homophone is and learnt that they arewords that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings, for example there and their. We then had to use homophones into a passion writing piece.
MATHS
We have continued working in our fluency groups to enhance our Numeracy skills and knowledge.
In Numeracy we have been learning how to complete multiplication and division problems using a variety of strategies. Firstly we explored multiplication through the double strategy. We did this through identifying different double patterns on a number chart. Next we explored using arrays to help solve multiplication problems. Then we explored halving, and we practised using this skill by playing a game. Lastly we learnt about vertical algorithms and how to solve these problems.
Then we explored how division is the opposite of multiplication and again explored different strategies we can use to solve division problems. We were given worded problems and different levels to work on and chose the stategy we felt most confident with to complete these.
Lastly we used our new knowledge of multiplication and division to complete task cards in small groups whilst playing the game Capture the Flag.
CBL
In CBL we have continued to work in small groups to research and learn about a state in Australia in more detail. We used a checklist and a rubric to ensure we were finding relevant information and created a presentation to share with another class. As part of CBL we also went on a walking excursion to Highlands Lake Reserve.
HARMONY DAY
In Week 8 we celebrated Harmony Day. This was held on the Friday and we got to wear orange or cultural clothes. We all shared something about our culture and shared our understanding of how everyone belongs. We watched Behind the News on Harmony Day and then created our own news report about our understanding of Harmony Day. We finished creating our hands to be used in a whole school display. Finally we went to assembly and watched a small group of students perform a cultural dance.
HIGHLANDS LAKE RESERVE EXCURSION
On Monday 23rd March the Year 4 cohort walked to Highlands Lake Reserve. We then broke up into smaller groups and worked on a booklet and located information to complete this booklet. We explored Nature vs Man Made by completing scavenger hunt looking at the climate, vegetation and landforms. We discvered how our community is connected and the ways in which we care for the environment. Lastly we played Spot the bird (locating all the different types of birds living in our local environment and how we are can connect to Indigenous cutlure. Classes also got to sepnd a little time exploring the playground.
