READING
In Reading in Week 3 we learnt how to find the main idea in a news article by recording what a section of text is mostly about. We learnt to identify topic sentences within the introduction and that we need facts to support this sentence. We located the important information in a text and then explianed in our own words what it all means so that we can decided what infortmatio matters most and become better readers of informational texts and so that we learn to ask questions to help us make sense of what we are reading.
In Week 3 we learnt how to summarise information texts by identifying important facts and details through note taking. We then used our notes to form a paragraph summary to build our understanding about a topic.
WRITING
In Writing we learnt about language features found in news articles. We learnt the improtance of using technical vocabulary that matches our topic. We explored the use of emotive language and hyperbole (an extreme exaggeration used to make a point, be funny, or show strong feelings) used in articles. We learnt that news articles need catch headlines and include a byline which helped us to demonstrated our understanding of language features through writing quick writes.
We learnt to use visual prompts to help us generate ideas and to share our ideas clearly.
We also started planning our own news article. We used a graphic organiser to explore our ideas and to organise our research so that we can sequence our research and make connections before writing. We then used this organiser to help us write a detailed article using descriptive and technical vocabulary to share our findings on a chosen informative topic.
Lastly we explored Mothers Day through different genres by unpack a visual prompt by using our five senses and exploring what the image makes us think and feel. This helped us to understand how the same topic can be presented through a variety of text types.
MATHS
Over the last two weeks we have been learning about decimals. We have learnt how to read, write and show tenths and hundredths as fractions and decimals using a numberline and a decimat.
We also continued to to work in small groups working on our number fluency goals.
Lastly we practiced our problem solving skills. We worked in small groups, chose strategies that we know such as drawing or using a table to work out an answer to a question.
CBL
In CBL we started looking at how technology impacts our daily lives by researching examples of technology and explaining what problem it solves and how it helps people. This helped us to understand how science improves our everyday lives and think about how we can use technology to solve problems in the future. We also learnt about how the environment impacts our daily lives by researching examples of how our surroundings and changes in it affect us.
In Week 3 we explored the impact of erosion and weathering through conducting experiment and we explored how natural processes shape the Earth through earthquakes and volcanoes to help us understand how these natural events affect the world we live in.
HIGHLANDS PARK GROUP
On Tuesday the 28th April 2026 a small selected group of Year 4 students chosen for demostrating the school values consistently and an interest in providing feedback on improving the Highlands Park. Sam and Angela came on behalf of the Hume Council. We were one of two schools provided with this opportunitty, the other being Elevation Secondary College. The session involved exploring different types of play elements that they like to play in and students had to chose their top 4 elements. Students them had the opportuntity to discuss theme ideas they would like to see at the park. Students then drew their ideal park on a postcard, which were collected and taken with Angela and Sam. Students then shared their ideas with each other. Sam and Angela looked forward to sharing the students ideas with the council and will come back and share the final architect drawings when completed.
