In Reading over the last two weeks we started our unit on realistic fiction. As part of this unit we have been introduced to the chapter book Wonder. We have been reading a chapter every lesson and unpacking how the main character, Auggie, is a realistic character. We have used the book to explore different reading strategies, such as predicting, making connections and inferring. 

In Writing over the last two weeks we have been exploring writing a realistic fiction. We have investigated what a makes a realistic setting and adding detail to make our stories more interesting. We have been learn to bump our our sentences through the use of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases. We practised using our senses and emotive language to expand our sentences.

In Maths during week 6 we continue to learn about fractions and consolidated our understanding of converting mixed numbers into improper fractions. We learnt how to use the MAD (Multiply, Add Denominator) method to do this. Then we practised also converting improper fractions to mixed numbers. We also learnt how to order fractions using a number line and lastly we solved words fractions problems. 

In week 7 we learnt how to use grid systems and intrepret grid references on a map. We played Battleship to help us understand giving and following directions. We learnt about scale by enlarging or shrinking minecraft characters through doubling and halving. We played Where's Wally (teacher edition) - a scavenger hunt to locate the grade 4 teachers using directions and grid references. Lastly we created our own maps on a grid paper, where we placed locations, recorded co-ordinates and created directions between locations. 

In CBL in Week 6 and 7 we explored Minecraft Education and began building our class world. In groups or independently we began creating and building a renewable, sustainable environment. These build continued into week 7, further developing our cities and ensure to design waste management and renewable energy sources as well.

In Week 6 it was Bully Prevention Week. During this week we focused on the theme 'Small Acts. Big Impact.' We learnt that small acts of kindness can make a big difference by helping everyone feel safe, included and respected. We did this by discussing ideas, watching a short video, working together on kindness ripple activities, and reflecting on ways we can make a positive difference.

We also watched a longer video on Bully prevention which helped define bullying and gave us a better understanding of  the concept ‘Small Acts, Big Impact’, We created a  friendship bracelet to encourage discussions around kindness and inclusivity to enable us to develop positive traits. 

In Week 7 we celebrated Book Week. Throughout the week we complete a variety of different tasks. For example we completed in the trivia challenge to name books with instruments or sounds in the title. (Well Done 4D for being 1 of the winners.) We took guesses at how many smarties were in the jar. We attended the library to preuse the books for sale at the book fair, and some of even bought items at it. On the Friday we dressed up as Book Characters - the year 4 teachers dressed up as characters from Toy Story. We started the day with a cohort parade where we celebrate everyone's effort to dress up. Congratulations to Haitham (4D) who was chosen by some staff as the best dressed in the cohort. For reading we created new book covers for our favourite book. We had to redesign the front cover, ensuring we included all the elements of a front cover and wrote a blurb on the back cover about the book without giving away the ending. In Writing, we wrote about the character we dressed up as, in first person, and drew a matching picture. 

In Week 7 we also finished our book week celebrations off with Buddies. In buddies we completed book week activities .For example we brought along or choose from classroom library ou favourite picture story book and shared it with outr grade 1 buddy.Other activities also completed were creating a bookmark, wordsearch, and colouring in.
