READING
In Reading over the last two weeks we have continued to explore different newspaper articles. Our focus in week 4 was identifying the key features of a newspaper article through annotating. This helped us to understand how news articles are different from informative texts.
We also learnt to analyse the features of both articles and information texts by comparing and contrasting the differences between the pair. This helped us understand that each text has a different purpose and different features.
In Week 5 we practised the reading skill synthesising. This is combining our prior knowledge about a topic and blending it with the new information we gain from the text. This helped us to form new understandings of the topics we are reading about.
WRITING
In Writing in Week 4 and 5 we continued to work on the writing cycle.
We also learnt to add powerful words - strong adjectives, informative phrases and technical vocabulary to inform readers. This helps ours writing to be convincing and clear.
Drafting of our newspaper reports was completed during these two weeks. We then moved on to revising and editing our draft .We did this by using ARMS (adding, removing, moving and substituting ideas and words) and CUPS (checking for capitals, understanding, punctutation and spelling)
Lastly we worked on publishing our news articles. We were able to chose our own way to publish. Some of us chose to handwrite it, while others created a multimodal presentation. We did this to help engage and inform the reader.
We also had the opportunity to present our newspaper articles to our peers.
NUMERACY
We have been really busy in Maths. We completed our unit on decimals by converting decimal units - tenths and hundredth - using our knowledge of place value.
We then started our next unit on measurement. First we learnt and practiced measure length using informal and formal metric units by identifying and choosing the most appopriate measuring tool to measure the length of different items. Next we learnt how to measure the perimeter of different regular and irrergular shapes by using metric units and adding up the sides around the item. We created our own mindcraft character and then worked out the perimeter using metric units of our character.
Then we learnt to measure the area of regular and irregular shapes by using informal units or to multiply length and width to measure a covered surface so that we can understand that area covers everything inside a shape. We created our own school yard and worked out both the perimeter and area of the items we placed in our dream school. This helped us to understand how to measure area and perimeter of real life objects.
We also learnt how to measure temperature by using a thermometer and iterpreting temperature using degrees Celsius.
Lastly we completed a problem solving task using a worded problem. We did this bu using our thinking skills and our knowledge of shapes and area. This helped us to connect what we had learnt and what we know about shapes to real life.
CBL
In CBL week 4 we started the week with our incursion.
We also learnt in week 4 and 5 about how lanscapes change over time . We created simple diagrams or models showing how landscapes change over time.
We explored how humans change the environment through farming, building, manufacturing and industrial waste. We learnt that our actions have an effect on Earth. We did this through investigting pollution and deforestation and added these elements to our time lapse images to show our understanding how we impact Earth.
Discovery Dome Incursion
We attended the incursion on Tuesday 12th May in the Gym. The incursion was inside a large Dome. Our presenters name was Nick. We learnt about climate change causes the Greenhouse Effect which results in our ice caps melting. The warmer weather causes the weather to change. This then causes water levels to rise or drop in some areas. This can potentially result in low lying small islands to become extremely dry and therefore become deserts or could totally be destroyed and disappear.
We also learnt about natural disasters such as cyclones, typhoons, hurricanes and tornadoes. We discovered how they contribute to changes to our planet. We learnt the these changes can lead to extreme weather.
We also learnt about the water cycle.
