Hollingsworth and Ybarra's Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) focuses on clear, structured teaching strategies. Yarrabah teachers will demonstrate these in every lesson:
Learning Objectives - clearly defined and communicated for each lesson using visual aids that make learning objectives and steps clear
Activation of Prior Knowledge - Connecting new information to what the student already knows
Concept Development - step-by-step instructions with clear explanations and examples
Guided Practice - teacher led practice with immediate feedback
Independent Practice - opportunities for students to practice independently to reinforce learning. The students will be provided tools and resources to work independently for short periods. These might include assistive technology,
Learning Objectives:
a) be specific and measurable - define clear, concrete goals that can be easily assessed. Teachers and/or Education Support Staff should be able to collect evidence of a student's achievement during the lesson and record that success.
b) focus on individual needs - customise objectives based on each student's unique strengths and challenges.
c) include functional skills - emphasise practical, everyday skills that promote independence
d) Use simple language - make objectives easy for both the student and the caregivers to understand. Visual supports can assist by using symbols, pictures, charts to clarify objectives
e) be flexible - adjust objectives as needed based on student progress and feedback
