Learning intention:
You will be able to identify and describe dynamics in a piece of music.
Success criteria:
I can aurally identify the use of dynamics in a piece.
I can describe the direction and movement (contour) of a songs dynamics.
I can Identify and describe the expressive element of dynamics.
I can describe how dynamics can be used to create interest and excitement in a piece.
How can you describe the volume of a song?
How can a lift in volume change the listener?
Discuss this with the person next to you and see what they think!
Below you will find a powerpoint that we will work through together as a class. We will be listening to different examples of songs that use dynamics as a focal point. We will learn some key terms to use when describing dynamics in any given song and how we can apply this to a performance.
After working through the powerpoint presentation, you will be required to complete one dynamics task as described in the next section of this page.
On Google Classroom you will find the assignment titled "Dynamics 1".
Today we will be listening to a piece of music together and discussing how dynamics have been used to create excitement and change throughout the piece. We will be listening to the song three times and discussing different aspects of the song including:
Instrumentation
Melody
Harmony/accompaniment
Instrumental techniques
Blend of instrumental voices
We will discuss how each of these impact the use of dynamics in the song.
You can use the vocabulary from today's powerpoint to support your participation in the discussion.
