Basic Analysis

Learning intention: 

• You will be able to identify the basic elements of a song in order to perform or analyse the song.

Success criteria: 

• I can describe what a music element is.

• I can describe the instrumentation of a given song and its role in the performance.

• I can Identify the key or tonality of a song (listening or in writing).

• I can describe the structure of any given song.

Basic Analysis Content

Below you will find a powerpoint that we will work through together as a class. We will also learn to play this song on a harmonic instrument during the class to get a practical understanding of the song in context.

After working through the powerpoint presentation, you will be required to complete a short "basic analysis" task as described in the next section of this page.

Basic Analysis Tasks

On Google Classroom you will find an assignment titled "Basic Song Analysis".

For the remainder of this class you are required to select one of the songs below to listen to, and use the template within the assignment. 

You will need to identify the following elements within the song:

• Instrumentation

• Tonality/Key Signature

• Structure/Form

• Harmony

• Genre

EXITING THE CLASS - LAST 5 MINUTES

NO ONE leaves until: 

• All equipment is wiped down, tidied up and packed away safely as instructed by the teacher. 

• Rubbish off the floor, white board cleaned, doors and windows locked. 

• Tables and chairs reset. 

• Classroom is tidy. 

• Wait for teacher instruction
