The aim of English in Years 9 and 10 is to enable students to develop their skills in using language. As would be expected, the skills become more sophisticated and the vehicles for expressing them become more complex year by year from Year 7 to Year 10.
Students are encouraged to develop accurate and perceptive listening skills. They are given scope to express themselves orally with the aim of developing more effective speech. In written work, the aim is to foster skills of communication including basic requirements such as accurate spelling and correct sentence forms, and to use a wide range of text types.
Students listen to, talk about, write about and observe matters that are significant in the following contexts:
personal expression;
literature;
mass media;
everyday communication.
Subject outcomes are assessed under the following headings:
Reading and Viewing Skills
Writing and Representing Skills
Speaking and Listening Skills
Responding to Literature
Thinking and Reflecting
The assessment result is designed to reflect all aspects of the Stage 4 Syllabus.
Ranks across the year are allocated according to:
(a) Four ‘common’ assessment tasks (one per term).
(b) Marks gained for class tasks in reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing.
Grades will be allocated according to the ranking determined by (a) and (b) above.
