PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Usually in Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8), the same subjects are studied by all students and the emphasis is on giving students a broad range of subject experiences. However, at Woonona High School students will also have the opportunity to choose from a range of Interest Electives which they will study in Year 8, 2024.
These electives are designed to run for two terms and have been developed by the teachers at this school with the aim of increasing the engagement of the students. As such, each student in Year 7 will choose from a range of options and will be placed in two electives (one in each semester). Teachers have been mindful of interest and relevance in developing these electives. Please note that not all electives in this booklet will run, with successful subjects based on collective year group choices and the number of students choosing particular options.
With regard to choosing electives, students should read the subject information in this booklet carefully and talk to teachers, parents and other students who may have undertaken a particular course in previous years. The best advice is for students to select subjects they like and have an interest in. If a student already has a particular career in mind, they should check with the School Careers Adviser to identify subjects that would be useful to study. Elective choices will be completed online.
Parents are reminded that some electives involve subject fees which must be paid to cover consumable items essential to run a particular course. If there is financial hardship, parents may apply to the school for support to cover any subject fees.
I hope that this initiative from the school proves to be successful in increasing student engagement in learning.
Ms Caroline David
Principal
