CERAMICS
This course will appeal to students who like working with their hands and building sculptures. A range of topics and hand building techniques are studied before moving on to major works. You will get the opportunity to build vases or vessels, as well as figurines, characters and creatures. After firing you will get the opportunity to paint, glaze or polish your work to ensure it is fully resolved.
COURSE OUTLINE:
Pinch pots and the processes of correct joining and construction are examined, before planning and building a musical instrument, bust or vessel.
Coils and slab techniques are explored and then students will design a background for a character before building a 3D model.
A variety of finishing methods are available, depending on the nature of the students work, but these include glazes, acrylics, spray paint, shellac and shoe polish.

CIRCUS SKILLS
Circus skills are an art form with a distinct body of knowledge including conventions, history, skills and method of creating. It is a vital part of our society and is celebrated worldwide as an expression of culture and belief as diverse as the values found in Australian culture.
Circus will provide students both individually and in groups with the opportunity to blend specialist physical activities with theatrical performance skills. Circus encourages students to work collaboratively and cooperatively throughout the process of creating and performing circus.
In circus, students are provided with a medium for personal expression. This enables the sharing of ideas, feelings and experiences whilst providing a valuable and unique means of enriching the physical, athletic, emotional, intellectual and social development for all students.

DANCE
The Year 8 Dance Elective is a dynamic course for students who enjoy dance and would like to improve their knowledge and skills. Dance is an active learning environment and provides students with the opportunity to learn a variety of dance styles including ballet, hip hop and jazz through performance and choreography. Dance has played an important role in a variety of cultures around our world and has continued to increase in popularity through music clips, television shows and films. No prior experience is necessary, and students from all dance backgrounds will develop their creativity skills in group and individual activities in choreography. Students will increase their understanding of dance as an art form through appreciation and analysis, as well as improving their performance skills in a wide variety of styles.

This course is designed for students to experience, understand, enjoy and value Drama as a social, collaborative and creative art form and as an expression of culture through making, performing and critically studying Drama and Theatre. Students acquire skills in interpretation, communication, performance, design & critical analysis, and are able to present work using technical processes & technologies.
Students will develop confidence in manipulating and controlling their voice and body to create meaning and engage audiences; these skills are not only beneficial for those who are interested in a career in the Performing Arts, but also highly valuable in everyday life. For instance, in job interviews, work presentations, celebration speeches, teaching, and sports coaching.

FILM AND MUSIC
Film and Music are fun and highly relevant in today’s society. The combination of moving images and sound is one of the most effective ways to entertain, inform and even persuade the modern audience. No matter what their career path, all students will benefit from further developing skills, knowledge and understanding in some of the digital technologies used to create and edit video and sound.
Students will learn about and participate in creating, recording, editing, arranging and mixing digital sound using audio software such as Audacity, Garageband and/or ProTools. They will use Adobe Premiere Elements, video/digital cameras, and/or other video software to direct, edit, produce and publish film projects.
Students will learn about:
Camera Techniques – framing, angles, camera movement, focus Editing (Audio/Video) – transition types, sequencing, digital effects Sound Design – sound effects, background music, recording, voice over
Film Creation – story boarding, production roles, set/costume/special effects
Students may also experiment with techniques such as ‘green screen’ and ‘stop motion’.

VISUAL ARTS – EXTENSION
This subject is an extension of the Stage 4 Mandatory Visual Arts course and has been designed to cater for students with a strong interest in exploring a range of artmaking techniques. It is compulsory for all students who are considering applying for our HSC Accelerated Visual Arts Program, which is based on compressing the curriculum, so students will complete the course, and its outcomes, in a shorter period of time than normal and will finish the HSC course during Year 11.
