PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Stage 5 is a time for students to establish skills and learning habits that will assist them in the future.
The choice of electives in Year 9 allows students to explore their talents and the subjects in which they are interested. Again this year we will be offering Year 9 the choice of a third elective of 100 hours which will run for one year. The other two electives are 200 hour courses, which means they will be studied for two years.
Students maximise their success when they choose subjects that they like and that they are good at.
This booklet provides subject information for students and should be carefully read to assist in the decision making process. To make good choices students should seek information from their teachers, Year Adviser, Careers Adviser, parents and students from other year groups who may have studied particular subjects in the past. They should not choose electives based on what teacher they think will be delivering the course as staffing is subject to change in order to accommodate other operational matters in the school.
Parents are reminded that some electives involve subject fees which must be paid to cover consumable items essential to run a course. Students selecting courses with fees attached will be required to pay the fee within the first 4 weeks of 2024. Parents may wish to apply for fee help to cover the cost of some of the elective courses. An application form for student assistance is available at the front office.
These electives offer students great opportunities to further their education and enjoyment of learning.

LEARNING MATERIAL RESOURCES
Subjects which use consumables need funding. If parents have difficulty meeting these requests, they should contact the Principal. In addition, all parents are asked to pay a General School Contribution to assist in providing goods and services beyond those provided by the Government.
The present request per student is:
Years 7, 8, 9, 10: $80.00
Years 11, 12: $100.00
with a $5.00 reduction for each additional child.
Students are required to select the TWO 200 hour elective subjects and ONE 100 hour elective subjects they would most like to undertake from the information supplied in this booklet. Students should make a THIRD & FOURTH choice in case one or both of their first two choices does not achieve sufficient numbers to run.
Students will select their electives online. Details are given below.
PLEASE NOTE:
Choose carefully, as your choices now will determine the electives that will be run in 2024 and 2025.
In particular, please note the fees that apply to the electives as these will need to be paid.
200 Hour Elective subjects run for two years at Woonona High School. 100 Hour Elective subjects will run for one year. Students must understand that they are choosing their electives on the basis that they will do the same subjects in both Year 9 and Year 10 for 200 hour subjects.
If parents/carers have any enquiries regarding elective choices they should contact Ms Merrideth McGregor (Deputy Principal) or Ms Grazia BArbuto (Year Advisor) at school on 42 841513.
Students seeking access to practical courses should be those who have consistently demonstrated safe behaviours at school.
