NHPSA held a debating workshop over three Fridays in May (term 2) for all Junior and Intermediate debaters. These workshops were conducted by Maja Vasic, a senior adjudicator and coach in the Department of Education Premier's Debating Challenge.
Maja guided students through the process of interpreting topics, debate preparation, speaker roles, structuring speeches, rebuttal and classifying arguments. The workshops were highly informative and supported all students in developing their debating skills.
The NHSPA English Faculty recently held a Microfiction writing competition. Microfiction is an extremely short form of fiction, usually under 100 words in length. Even with this constraint, Microfiction can be a compelling and powerful medium through which to tell a narrative, as demonstrated by student entries in the NHSPA Microfiction Competition.
The competition ran across all year groups and reflected the diversity, creativity and ingenuity of the NHSPA student body. Competition entries will be judged by the S.E.E.D. team, and there will also be an English Faculty Prize as chosen by the NHSPA English teachers. Competition winners will be announced early in Term 3.
Here is one of our shortlisted entries from talented Year 7 student Leo Brasse Warhaft:
"The sound of iron hooves peppered the cobblestone streets as the fiaker made their way through Vienna. As the sun began to set, the winter breeze bit his face and the imposing buildings loomed over him, dwarfing his shadow. Lost. He recalled the months travelling from his hometown of Istanbul to the harsh, forbidding city of Vienna. Retreating from the cold, he ducked into a café. At the counter next to him stood Nikolai, who also hailed from a foreign place–the city of Sofia. As Nikolia bought him a drink, the sun sunk below the quaint Vienna skyline. Home."
Congratulations to our Senior A Debating Team! Josephine Bradfield, Rafael Gonzalez, Lola Merewether, Scarlett Saunders, Emma Walker and Karys Werstak have consistently performed at a high level in the Premier's Debating Challenge, achieving victory over some formidable opponents.
With laser focus and a hunger to win, this team has made it all the way to Round 7 of the competition. With eight teams left in NSW, we wish our debaters all the best in their next debate!

Topic selection is serious business
Staring down the competition during second speaker delivery
Scarlett Saunders in Year 12 and Charlotte Ring in Year 11 recently participated in the local final for the Plain English-Speaking Awards at Presbyterian Ladies’ College.
Both students delivered impressive and eloquent speeches amongst a cohort of high-caliber students, representing NHSPA with aplomb and maintaining the reputation of our school as one of excellence in debating and public speaking.
The occasion was also an opportunity for students to receive expert feedback and hone their skills, providing Scarlett and Charlotte with a wealth of knowledge to share with our Junior debating and public speaking students.
In collaboration with the NHSPA Science faculty, students in English developed an advertising campaign to promote their collaboratively designed complex machines.
The campaign included a 1–2-minute video presentation containing both verbal and visual components.
The presentations showcased the ingenuity and originality of NHSPA students in a variety of fields. Here are some examples of quality student work, reflecting the creative and persuasive capacities of our student body.

After a teaching career of over 30 years, NHSPA English teacher Mr Crich is saying goodbye to full-time teaching at NHSPA, leaving a Hawaiian shirt-shaped hole in the English faculty and our school.
While we’re sad to see him go, staff and students alike at NHSPA have had the benefit of his deep knowledge and encouragement over the past decade.
We wish Mr Crich all the best in this next chapter of life!
