The cat (or rather dog) is out of the bag. We can finally announce that we will be producing "Legally Blonde" in Term 1 next year. The reveal and information session was a sell-out as over 200 students flooded the studio theatre to get the goss on which rumour was true.
The production team presented the concept for the show as well as all the information for students to audition. As of the writing of this, we have over 100 students committed to auditioning for this production so it will be a long and rigorous process as we embark on our own search for the next Elle Woods... Stay tuned for casting info next term.
A selection of moments from this weeks' Drama showcase. We had over 100 students performing pieces from Year 7 up to our Year 12s. It is always such a great feeling to showcase the full range of work the Drama faculty has put together over the semester.
A special thank you to Ben Turner and the technical crew, Ms Van Munster who stage managed and kept everything running so smoothly, the company directors, and the staff who helped to supervise backstage. It is only with all their support that we can bring off such a mammoth achievement - Two nights in a row!
In Week 7 of this term, several of our Year 11 students performed as part of Burwood Girls High School's production of "Chicago - Teen edition". Our boys played the male lead and ensemble parts and we also had some significant parts in the orchestra. Congratulations to Denholm Branson, George Holahan-Cantwel, Wylie Best, Matthew Pieri, Danny Dietrich, Dylan Kamaralli Wilson and our musicians, Mira Browne, James Huynh, Bec Walker and Alex Carling.
A range of images and moments from our Drama Tour where we took 40 students to the UK over the Term 1 holidays. It was mostly work but also play and our Senior students will remember this trip for a long time!
We visited Shakespeare's birthplace, did workshops at the RSC, toured The National Theatre, had extended training with Frantic Assembly and Complicité, saw 6 West End productions, participated in an immersive musical production of Guys and Dolls, spend a day at Shakespeare's Globe and caught a dress rehearsal of the production there... and so much more.
Our HSC Drama cohort were lucky to be able to attend a special schools performance of the current STC production of Stolen by Jane Harrison. Not only is this a text that our students study for their Australian Theatre unit, but a hugely significant piece of indigenous Australian work about the Stolen generations, which was created in response to the Bringing them Home report released in 1997.
This production was powerful, evocative, shocking and heartfelt, and it was such a wonderful experience for students to see the work they have been studying being brought to life by such a talented cast and creative team. We were also able to have the director speak to the students prior to the show and participate in a post show Q and A with the cast where students were able to ask some quite insightful questions about the work and the process of staging it.
Last year, Year 8 attended an excursion to see Noam Sen Gupta perform in "The Lies We Were Told", a production by Shopfront Arts and Monkey Baa. This outstanding production has won Best Production for Young People at the prestigious Sydney Theatre Awards 2024.
Congratulations to Noam!
With the wonderful news about Year 12 student Katie Laga'aia being cast as Moana in the new Disney live action remake, there has been a lot of talk in the community about Newtown High School of the Performing Arts and the successes of our students in the Entertainment Industry. We just wanted to highlight the achievements of some of our alumni who are currently in major productions. We have many of our current students also working in the industry while completing their studies and are so lucky we can provide an environment that supports these young performers while they are still in school.

Otis Dhanji (Grad. 2020)(Aquaman, Talk to Me) will be back onstage as the lead in Peter and the Starcatcher in February.
