My name is Lisa Welsh and I am the Head Teacher of English at Lake Munmorah High School.
It is really important that students choose the correct course in English that best suits their learning abilities and needs. Hopefully I can explain those choices, and help you to choose which English course is right for you.
Students have a choice of four English courses:
English Studies
English Standard
English Advanced
(These are 2 unit courses)
English Extension
English Extension is a one unit course which requires students to be enrolled in the English Advanced course. If you are a high achiever, have a passion for literature, and are considering choosing the English Extension course, I would suggest you give it a go. It strongly supports your learning in English Advanced and you can always drop it in Year 12, although in my experience of teaching Extension for many years, most students who choose it, choose to stay on Year 12, leading to Extension 1 and Extension 2.
English is compulsory
Two units of English is required in both Year 11 and Year 12
You need to successfully complete Year 11 English before you move to Year 12. This means that all assessment tasks need to be completed.
If a student requires an ATAR for further education, they must pick the correct English course.
The ATAR is a rank that enables students to gain entry into university. All courses enable students to obtain an ATAR however, I would strongly suggest that if you are wanting to gain an ATAR, that you don’t choose English Studies, but choose the Standard course as it will better equip you with the skills to complete the HSC examination. The English Studies exam is actually longer than the English Standard exam.
One of the reasons that it is important to choose the correct English course is that the assessment tasks in Year 11 align closely to the Year 12 tasks. This means that the skills you learn in Year 11 are built upon in Year 12. The new HSC Syllabus offers students a more hands on approach to their learning, including the compulsory Multimodal task that enables students to combine technology skills with content. It is compulsory for all students to complete a Multimodal task in all English courses. Speaking is a component in both Year 11 and 12 assessment tasks.
The important thing to remember is to choose the course most suitable for you. If you are unsure about which course is right for you, speak to your teacher or myself. We are happy to sit with you and discuss your needs to ensure you choose the course most suitable for you.
Which one will you choose?
This course provides students with the opportunity to develop and consolidate specific English language knowledge, understanding and skills. Through responding to and composing a range of texts and through the close study of a variety of texts students develop and refine skills in spoken and written English to become confident and effective communicators.
Students must meet certain requirements for this course. Please speak to your teacher, or the Head Teacher of English, for further clarification.
