Queer Representation in the Media

Queer representation is the portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters within films, TV shows, books, and any other forms of media. Queer representation is also about how these characters are written and whether they do justice to the queer experience or are only written in for the diversity points.

Good representation is an LGBTQ+ character in forms of media that is well researched, well-informed, and their experiences are that of an LGBTQ+ person. These characters are more three dimensional than many characters we see in popular shows and are not put into a box on how they should act or be.

Bad representation is the portrayal of a character that has not been properly researched and is written poorly. These characters are generally created to add more ‘diversity’ to the media and are written like hetero-cis-normative characters with their gender or sexuality changed. Sometimes, the writer/creator can mean well but go about it the wrong way, which results in a poorly created character. Badly represented characters generally fall into well recognised stereotypes that paint queer people as something negative or push the character as a joke for audiences. Writers and directors are, however, slowly moving away from these stereotypes and are listening to the experiences of queer people, in order to create characters that are relatable and are well represented.
