This model integrates research-based insights from inquiry learning (Kuhlthau ,2012; Darling-Hammond, 2008; Scott and Friesen, 2013) with the Australian Curriculum general capabilities. It can be contextualised for any learning area or used to integrate disciplines.
The process integrates:
ICT capability (ICT) - the three phases of this model are based on the work flow of of ICT capability (investigate, create, communicate). However, the approach can be used without 1:1 access to technology.
Critical and creative thinking (CCT) - presented as a series of diamonds to guide the divergent and convergent thinking processes that help students explore, generate, analyse and reflect on ideas.
Personal and social capability (PSC) - students are encouraged to consider feedback and reflect on their learning throughout the inquiry. The teacher's role is often to model guiding questions at pivot points through the inquiry.
Literacy (Lit) and numeracy (Num) - students will use literacy and numeracy skills as they access multi-model information to answer their inquiry and communicate their findings.
Opportunities for ethical understanding and intercultural understanding can be presented through the content, process and product of student inquiry.
The model can be applied to any learning area or to facilitate cross-curricular/integrated learning. An integrated approach is a great opportunity for teachers to collaborate, and for students to appreciate the horizontal connectedness of learning.
This page provides an overview of the model. Once you're comfortable with the model, explore practical strategies to implement each phase.

Engage students in an opening event to stimulate cognitive and emotional engagement.
Note - this will be led by an educator, but should provide opportunities for students to share their background and cultural knowledge.
Students will:
search a broad range of information to determine a focus area
develop information literacy.
Pose questions (CCT) and plan information searches (ICT)
Search and select information and clarify ideas (ICT, CCT)
Evaluate and organise information (ICT, CCT)
Students will:
practice divergent and convergent thinking
create new knowledge or products.
Imagine possibilities (CCT) and plan solutions (ICT)
Connect ideas and draw conclusions (CCT)
Consider alternatives and apply logic and reasoning (CCT)
Students will:
develop literacy skills as they communicate their findings
respond to alternative views.
Transfer knowledge into new contexts (CCT) using appropriate types of texts (Literacy).
Share ideas and findings (ICT) and consider feedback from diverse perspectives (PSC)
Evaluate procedures and outcomes and reflect on processes (CCT, PSC).
